Default Early x-member with late mounts

so all i have to do its drill the holes for the locating pins on the later mounts, so they sit nice on my early x-member right?

No, engine will not fit. Need new style crossmember. Speaking from experience here...

If you just drill the holes in the early crossmember and install the new style mounts, the oil pan cannot clear the mounting plates on the mounts. Distance between the mounts will be too narrow....I know, hard to believe.

Very subtle difference in shape of new style crossmember.

I found out when it was too late.... "Why the **** won't this engine just drop in?" Crawled under and found out ....

Easy enough to put in a later style crossmember.

Is it possible to use the early style mounts with the 5L block? The early mounts don't have the problems that the later mounts have.

How did you do that w/o dropping the rack?

Ok so here is what i did
removed control arms bolts
removed A-arm supports (xmember to top control arm nut)
removed rack bolts and steering column coping (marking for position)
then removed last 17mm bolt on back top of xmemeber

when it was loose, i pushed rack down a bit, and then kicked out the pass side of the crossmember to the back of the car. then pulled the driver side of member to the front. popped right out for me. install was in reverse.
