Actually I went over the car pretty well, and she is pretty rock solid mechanically and electronically. It is definitely not a flood car, and definitely only has 37000 kilometers. Everything works perfectly, engine, trans, brakes, seats, sunroof, locks, cd player, ect, ect, It looks like new underneath. I am going to put an in service license plate on it, and take it for a good long test drive later this week. That will also help to to decide what route to go. I mean the thing started right up, the oil is spotless, antifreeze/coolant looks great, nothing is dry rotted, it is just all cosmetic.

Hey Bruce you forgot "Intake Refresh = $1,500" ... you know, it's eerie, almost like you've seen the list of things I've done to my car (gulp!)

Lighten up, Francis.

It was a JOKE!

Oh man you definitely have to fix it now. Just the fact the electrical works is enough to fall in love. Who cares about 'rational' you have a 93 GTS Black ! I would pull a Ronnie Lott for that .. (I dont use my right pinky finger much anyway.)

One other thing to check out before you go too far into this is the gas filler lid. IIRC, it was missing and I'm not sure you can buy those from Porsche anymore. I doubt you'll have much luck finding a used one either.

I would definitely try to save this car.
With about 11k, you would have a very nice and good car.
I would start with this and see after.

If the body condition is any indicator, I’m guessing it will probably need the stuff below too. That alone is $18.4 and does not include labor. If the title doesn’t pan out and you don’t want to keep it for your own enjoyment, I’d be on it like Vince with a slap-chop.

Interior = $2K - Yes
Paint = $6K - Yes
Shocks/springs = $1K - You can keep those for while for sure.
Brakes/rotors = $1K - You can keep those too.
Tires and alignment = $1K - Yes
Rims = $1K - Why?
Rubber seals (door, window scrapers) = $1K - Maybe.
TB/WP = $800 - Yes.
Radiator (probably) $700 - Possibly not
Exhaust = $2K - Why?
PS hoses = $500 - Maybe
Belly pans = $400 - If you want
Radiator hoses, fuel lines, etc = $500 - Yes
Dump all fluids (and hope the PSD isn’t rusted) = $300 - Yes
MM/OPG = $200 - Yes

Plugs, rotors, plug wires, bad sensors, broke seat switches, inop window switches, etc., etc., etc.,

Default I will take it if you change your mind.

You can get it done. It may have to be out of state...
but in the long run you will have a low mile GTS. Seriously if it is too much email me. Like I said before I was going to do it if you didn't
Glutton for punishment in socal.

+1 on all the above.

But that half/half phenomena- look at all the folks trying to provide advice based on numbers and financials...when how many of us really acted accordingly with our own moneypits?

Half passion, half rationalization....

drive the car far enough outside of the city and you can do better than paying $6 k for new paint.

what a find.

Hit the bricks, ya has-been.

Shouldn't you be trolling an Audi forum?
LOL...I knew that was coming from somewhere sooner or later. Just the kind of mentality here on RL lol (now I'M kidding)

As for the car, good luck with trying to get it titled... HOWEVER, you still MAY be able to get it done. It's just going to take a bit of work. I would find out who/what organization "totaled" the car...AND, when it was filed/reported. Get the report. If it was just a write off because of the cars value at a certain time, you may be able to contest it as long as there was no safety issues attached to the report. In this case, it may be possible to get the title re-instated since the value has changed and is now feasible to repair the noted damage contained in the report. IF...there is no archives of the report, that may work to your advantage. It would then just be a matter (I believe) of going to a USDOT facility and having them check the car....even if you have to pay for it. As long as it was not in an accident that compromised the structural integrity, you may have a very good shot at this.

I think you should already know what direction to take. If you have your heart set to fix it then fix it, if you want to part it out, then part it out. There is no point coming here and asking for advice on what to do. In the end its your money and time.

Knowing that it was salvaged but a decent car, I would personally keep it for my self and fix it up, while keeping in mind that I will never get my money back if the day comes to sell it. There is no such a thing as making a profit on a 928 that needs "restoration", especially with one that has a salvage history.

That said, for a low mileage GTS that seems to be mechanically solid, you did pretty good.

Keep it, or sell it.

I don't think you should put another dime into it, or part it. Clarify the title and history and sell it. Only the person that plans to keep the car should put money in it. Everything you do to it, title, driving, clarifies the condition, which may increase or decrease the value, and thats very nice of you, but the most profit will come from not being the flake the PO was and selling it with nothing but some cleaning.

If I was a potential buyer, and I'm not, nothing you spend on it would add a penny to what I would pay for it, because all of it would need to be redone to my personal standards, not flipper standards. The idea of the $6k paint job I find especially poor, granted its a black single stage paint, but who that would be a buyer for a 23k mile GTS wants the cheapest paint in town?

Yea, I agree... I think $8k would have been a total steal that would need to land you in the pokey! LOL!

Randy, not sure why you think $8k would be to much...again, assuming the miles are correct he can bring this car back and still be in positive money, even if it has a salvage title (assuming it is not a flood car salvage anyway).

It would be a FELONY to part that car if it's got a clean title.

Carfax?
