Default Engine Install Question - Motor Mounts

When re-installing the engine should the motor mounts be attached to the cross member or the block?

when installing it to the x-member? id think either one should work. i plan on mounting them to the x-member first when i do mine. but i have not done that job yet, so we shall see.

That's how I've been trying to do it, but it looks like I might giet more clearance if I install the mounts to the block first then lower the engine and mounts down to the x-member. Just wondering how the RL'er guru's do it.

Onto crossmember. Lower engine to them. "Gentle" prying will get them to pop right in.

I'll have to try the prying trick, it's not working too well just trying to drop it in. Thanks

I just put my engine back in today. Are you putting it in with the flywheel ( rear of the engine ) tilted down ? Thats how I did it and it went right into place with minimal wiggle.

You need to have the upper painted black mount installed onto the mounts and tightened. You will install the 4 10mm bolts and the 4 8mm bolts, after it sits onto the mounts.

Challenge is sometimes getting the heat shields back in. Resist the temptation to leave them out. IIRC, I left them a little loose, tightened them after the lower mount bolts were through the crossmember.

Jay, yes I'm tilting the flywheel portion of the block down, the problem is that the block hits the motor mounts before i can get it back far enough to clear. Tomorrow maybe I'll try tilting it a little more.

Greg, I didn't have the upper portion of the motor mounts tightend down as the hooks keep the slot on the upper piece from being centered. I was hoping to install the engine and compress the mounts a liitle before I tightend the top bolt. Tomorrow I'll see if I can get the portion of the upper piece centered and then tighten it down. Hopefully tightening the mount down, tilting the engine a bit more, and using a pry bar to get the block past the mounts will do the trick.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Dr. Bob, With the engine re-install I'm changing back from the aluminum alloy mounts to the new volvo mounts (not that I didn't like the alloy mounts). I was able to find the heat sheilds in the stack of stock parts that I'm saving "just in case" but was hoping I could install the shields after the engine was in???

I don't think you can. My memory is they needed to go in with the MM brackets. Maybe others with more experience can comment. I've only done a few MM jobs.

I've always done the motor install with the mounts on the crossmember. You may have to flex them a bit with a prybar for the motor to get over them. This is why it helps to have 2 people doing this job. Still, it's much easier than trying to thread the mount lower bolt into the crossmember. I can't say for sure you couldn't get the heatshields on afterward, but I wouldn't want to try. I've never had them be a problem with dropping the motor in.

I leave the shields on, and put the motor mounts on the cross member, but I dont tighten the lower nuts until the engine is in. This makes the reinstall significantly easier.

I really don't want to leave the shields out so I guess I'll lift the engine back up and install them while I can. Thanks.
