Default 928 Estate RECORD lap at Thunderhill....

Today was an open track test day at Thunderhill....I managed to get the day off and headed up to the hill last night..... I wanted to test my budget special tire-wheel combo.... Pirelli Slicks takeoffs from GT3 cups...275/645-18 for $25 each....mounted on my TR Motorsports 18x10x65mm wheels that were $99 each.... Fit was perfect...no rubbing short of full lock....

The fact that slicks take TIME to warm up is true......1st session in the morning at about 40F temps + slicks that haven't been driven in months = SLICK SLICK SLICK.... but after about 15 minutes they were scrubbed in and up to temp....

Watched my best lap time ever over the top 2:09.67 drop with ease....wasn't even squealing the tires or sliding at all.....kept trying...2:08's......came and went....then I got to 2:07.45....next lap...2:07.47....I was quite pleased....

Next time out I got in a nice battle with a Spec Racer Ford and Lotus Elise.....managed my best lap of 2:06.52 chasing them.... 3 seconds PER LAP better......

Of course my "new" video camera died.....since its a POS......but I took a couple pics anyway....

Way to go Brian. Imagine you'd find a couple more seconds if you weren't dragging around so much ugly.

thats so awesome. you are getting near Scot and my time time when we had 290rwhp. 2:04.1
(but on old DOTs) very cool

the car looks great.

must be fun to run on superman tires. i have set of 305s and cant wait to try them!

great job, now run NASA and do some real racing, and use those slicks! they should last a long time at those lap times and grip like monsters. lets mount up the big rotor adapters and give it some 13" rotors and you might even drop more time!

No doubt............but I have between 215whp & 198whp..at 2800lbs without driver..... I made 215whp on the mustang dyno and a quite low 198whp on a dynojet (next door at Thunderhill MCE Racing...) odd really...but I did have BAD wheel bearings when I did the low 198whp run..but sucking up 17whp....that seems excessive...

when my current front pads-rotors are gone I will upgrade to the 13" cayenne rotors...hard argue with cheaper rotors that go from 290mm to 330mm for LESS per rotor...

There is a HUGE difference between 290whp and my lowly 215whp...not to mention the slushbox....while I don't doubt MK or Anderson could lower my best lap....I don't think a 2:04.1 is possible in the current setup....I'd say either of you could lay down a 2:05.??....this might require some testing to find out!!!

My impression of the brakes on slicks started out BAD....but once they got up to proper temp...we are talking POWER...suck the eyeballs out of your head power...so you are carrying 10mph more than usual at the same braking spot...but wait .5 second later to brake...and still end up parking it in the corner.... It took me a while to figure it out....honestly I still haven't

Slicks really are CRACK....stupid addictive....I can't see going back now...of course $25 per tire is SILLY CRACK....this IS the future for the Estate....

I still have a set of 245/45-16 RA1's at about 50% to wear out + about a 75% set of 245/45-16 Hoosier R6's to wear out....on top of 6 225/50-16 street tires...& the 265/35-18 street tires from the last lemons event...

Congrats on a nice, if rough, tool. Very cool.

Kinda OT but I really like the profile you've come up with for the car. Appearance-wise and, if you were doing ORR and it were closed up, better aero would make it faster.

I forgot how much pirelli slicks are, but lets just say you could be a couple of 928 race cars with a set.
since, half of thunderhill is all handling, its not surprising to see your times drop 3 seconcds for the sllicks. you woldnt see that kind of drop at laguna, as I was racing the GMG GT3 in our GTGP races last year, and the slicks were an advantage, but not that much. when i run against the slicks at thunderhill, i really have to give up after the first few laps against them, when mine overheat and they just are coming into their own.

In your case, HP is cheaper than the tires, to get where you are now, unless you can find more at $25 each.

Great job.

JUST think of the looks you are going to get when you race in GTS2 with the Wagon!

get that license and get in a real race! its time!!

the original theory behind the car was to make a "shooting brake" in the euro sense for Lemons racing...since you always need a gimmic....but I called it the "estate" once it was done....

In terms of Aero, my best guess (I'm no where near an engineer) is my current setup has more drag than a stock 928, BUT it does have more downforce at the rear....

the open windows at the rear are more of a variable that I don't fully understand... after talking to some aerodynamic engineer friends my best guess is to leave it as is...something about the vacuum it creates sucking air from the forward doors and the way it exits the car helping reduce drag or increasing downforce...I dunno...but he said NOT to seal anything up...

The estate sure is an unknown variable.....but its hard to argue with its results on track....I doubt there is another automatic 928 anywhere that can match its lap times....even with FAR more power...

The rest of the setup is easy....gut it to the bone, stock S brakes with high temp fluid and stainless lines + Raybestos St43 front and Hawk black rear, Bilstein shocks with Eibach springs cut -1.5 coils.... stock front sway bars, rear stock sway bars with Ott adjustable links and carls tow hook-drop links....thats really it...

no magic....just time on track and advice from other 928ers who paved the road....
