Is adding a X pipe and removing the cats. a DIY job or should you take this to muffler shop?

DIY. Just get a shorter belt and bypass or delete the air pump. I left mine in place. There's a thread somewhere with the Grainger part number you need.

Yeah - it stinks a little, but i just tell my bride "That's what horsepower smells like".

No cats +X-Pipe = my new love!! ... I got mine today!

Many thanks to my friends Brad, John, Jim and Roger for working on my 928 today. They installed an X-pipe w/o cats along with new Motor Mounts, Delrin Bushings, a Silicone Oil Pan Gasket, an O2 Sensor and a fresh Mobil 1 oil service. All parts were supplied by 928s R US. At start up, the engine rocked which I've never seen before. The ride home was so smooth, the steering was so crisp and the pedal action was simply awesome. Several times I found myself thinking ... so this is how a 928 is supposed to drive. Thanks a lot guys. See you Saturday at the DFW 928 Get Together.

I'm doing this on my '86.5, X pipe arrived this week, would like to see someone develop some "shorty" headers that bolt to the X, like the new Mustang Boss 302 has. Now that would be sweeeet

If they "sniff" in your state/city, might as well do it yourself becuase you might be installing the the old exhaust each year. Not sure how that works in Austin where they do sniff; are they exempt because of age??

I love the sound of my '85 with the X-pipe/cat delete! As a 928 should sound. I recently posted about being at my 1st PCA DE last week. One of my instructors was a 944 guy, great instructor. He told me he'd never even sat in a 928. By our 2nd set, he told me that he loved the sound of the V8 on the front straight. He said that he kept anticipating the last corner coming on to the straight to hear my V8 rumbling as I opened it up. One of the highlights of the weekend for me.

Hear, hear! This is what I'd like, too. Basically the stock 32V header, but with a 2.5" collector. Doesn't have to be equal length.

If I could only TIG weld...
