Should I trade 944 for 928??

I've owned two s4's and now a 79. I may be in a minority, but love my 79 more than the s4's, and I loved my s4's a lot! The OB MY are under appreciated. A few mods brings out alot of hidden power. However, buy one that is well sorted, it costs more up front, but less in the long run.

I test drove lots of 928's before buying my S4, and everyone single one of them, even those that looked like they were used as mobile fox holes in Beirut, overwhelmed me with pure joy while behind the wheel as the tach swept past 4K rpms to redline. If all eight cylinders are firing, and nothing falls off as you're going down the road, its going to be a good test drive.

I absolutely agree with this. My S4 probably tops my '79 by 100hp, but when I'm in the '79, I don't miss it. I've been on drives where I've been in my S4 and have OB's in the group, and they have no problem keeping (and exceeding) the pace. Likewise I've been in an OB with other higher HP machinery and have had no problem keeping pace. It may be comparably under powered compared to an S4 on paper, but the OB's are still an excellent balance of power and handling for the street.

One of the things I didn't learn until later in life is that two similar types of things can each be wonderful and still be very different. Porsche has a keen idea of balance, and all models of the 928 have it. That said what I would have a hard time being happy with is a bone stock early car after driving one with a few enhancements like opened up exhaust. The drop in power over 5k rpm vs no drop feels like something is wrong to me.

That's the "problem" with test driving a 928. Until you've driven a few, even a bad drive is a good one to the uninitiated. Moral to the story, regardless of the extent of the favorable impression that the test drive will leave upon you, still have someone knowledgable do a PPI on the car.
