Default Should I trade 944 for 928??

My name is joe and I live in Athens, Ga. I own a 84 944 with 115xxx miles and is in decent cosmetic shape. I have recently ( a few months ago) become seriously interested in getting a 928.
I found a 1980 Porsche 928 black on black about 2 hours away that I plan on going to test drive. The guy selling says he is possibly interested in trading me for my car. It has 160000 roughly and just got a new clutch. Cosmetically it needs some work but he says it runs strong. All of this I have yet to confirm because I have not seen the car in person or driven it. Wondering if anyone had some suggestions, comments, or advice. All would be appreciated!!!

You won't know until you get there and drive it. If you get in and you like it, go for it.

the real question is why that guy would trade a 928 for a 944? I'd be wary of the car.

He would trade because he can not afford to fix the 928. Do you have a few thousand dollars set aside to spend on fixing the 928. And do not expect it to be an everyday driver until it gets sorted out.

Is the 1980 928 model even worth getting. The guy apparently owns 7 Porsche and I think he is just interested in trading around

Only if you really want a early car are happy with 220 HP and performance just a bit better than your 944.

I will be test driving it in a few weeks. What are some things to look for in the older model that may be a concern? Also, is the interior expensive or difficult to refurbish? I haven't done any research on that yet.

Difficult, no. Expensive, yes.

I prefer the 928 as I simply like the sound and feel of the V8. Even a 4.5 litre (like mine) can be fun!

With forced induction, you can get that and more out of the 928 as well; although, options are more limited for the older models.

Big investment for either the 944 or 928 though.

I wouldn't have a sports car like this unless I had the funds to keep it up. It is a hobby and passion for me, not an essential. My drivers are newer cars that cost far less to fix and run, and reliability is not an issue. An old exotic is never a car to buy if transportation is what you need. And never a car to buy if keeping it running is too expensive for you. I know there are those that buy these cars as their daily drivers, and kept well sorted they work out just fine, but you better have the reserves set aside for that too.
