Tall Driver Wants To Adjust Seat Tracking

Tall Driver Wants To Adjust Seat Tracking
I am a 6'5" driver that has been thinking about a 928 for years. I really like the 1986 1/2 models with the old body style and newer engines.
Anyway, the only way I could drive (in comfort) a 928 would be to make a modification to the driver's seat. I would be willing to sacrifice the rear, driver's side seat if necessary. (I would like to be able to switch it back to stock, if necessary.)
Does anyone have experience making this sort of modification for a tall driver to an older (or newer) 928? I want to keep the stock look, so buying a cheesy aftermarket seat is not an option.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. A whole lot of tall people like the 928.
I'm 6'3" in Orange, and the item you will come to hate is the sun roof, cuts out about 2" of head room. I have a US 83 without a sunroof, and a Euro 85 with a sunroof, and what helps in the 85 is that I found an early set of manual seats which are about 1" lower than power seats.
Try a few cars, you may decide a tilted back seat with an extended hub steering wheel is enough for you, or maybe that only a non sun roof early car will work.

The seats can be moved back - there are two sets of holes. This will gain you an inch or so back, and a little bit down. Agree that a non-sunroof car would help a lot.
The throttle pedal can be moved.
If you need to recline the seat, an extended hub was available for the steering wheel. A small wheel might help with leg clearance.
There were several pro basketball players with 928s over the years.

Welcome to the forum. I'm also 6'3"+, and like what's been said above, a manual seat will get an inch, and a non-sunroof 928 will net you approx 2". Unfortunately, most 81 + 928's do have sunroofs, but if you are patient, you will find a non-sunroof 928. Dwayne found 2 later model 928's (he is about 6'7"+). While my car was in for paint, I deleted the sunroof altogether as a few others have done. BTW, same birthday. 77Tony

IIRC, Mark Anderson said that it was easier to cut the roof off and install a non-sunroof roof and interior panel. If he has one in stock...

It depends on how you are tall; I'm six four, have long legs (36"inseam). I tried the back seat bolts, and moved the accellerator pedal forward as far as it would go, and reclined the drivers seat a notch. My head is about about an inch from the roof, legs are pretty straight, but my keycase dangles from the ignition switch and reaches my right knee. I did measure; I can tap, drill and install a piece of steel plate under the seat brackets and move the seat back about another inch and a half, but that will of course move the seat more upright (as the seat will hit the C pillar), but the seat will be slightly back further and it may offset that.

Thanks for all the great input. Do non-sunroof cars all have more legroom? Or just headroom?
Can anyone recommend someone in L.A. area that would be competent to make a modification such as installing a steel plate in the seat bracket?
Did Porsche sell a smaller wheel or do you have to go aftermarket?
Thanks again.

Nope, 'back seat bolts' means unbolting the seat from the rails and using the second, 1 inch further rearward, set of bolt holes. Here's a thread where Dwayne posted some pics of the mounting holes in post #40:

Thanks for all the input, guys. I will be on the lookout for one of these great cars since I am more comfortable about making one fit. When and if I get one, I'll refer back to this thread.

You really should talk some more with us before you buy one, not all of them are nice cars.
