How about a 4.7 shotblock with the Euro top? They are cheap emough that you can keep the SC setup too?

I think if the OP is capable of turning wrenches there should be good options like this idea. I think he just needs to step back for a minute and weigh everything.

I wonder what has made Stephen think he has blown the rings, not real sure exactly what that means.

I am pretty sure that the car had excessive blowby when it was at my shop for a small electrical problem, and we all know that getting oil in the chambers will cause detonation.

Personally I would want to find out what issues the motor has before I started selling stuff and changing the whole car.

4.7 engines are a dime a dozen, if you busted a piston or two, pull the top end off and put it on a good used short block and get back on the road.

Stephen, i may not have any right to say this and it may not be my place but it seems that everyone else is biting their tongue. You know that's not my style. You have somehow forked up a very special car in record time. This is a car that a great many people got to know and admired over the years at SITM. It is a car that should not be broken apart or made less than what is was when you got it. You chose to be it's caretaker. Now you have an obligation to make it whole again or put it in the hands of someone who will. I know that this seems a little overwhelming now and your wife is likely telling you "I told you so" or maybe something worse. It will pass. It always does. Weather the storm and get this car repaired properly without breaking it up. Maybe it needs to go into storage for a few months while you get your ducks in a row. There are alot of people here that will help you and help make sure the car doesn't go the way of the Dodo bird. Take a deap breath and weigh your options after the dust has settled. In the mean time, be a little extra nice to your lovely wife. It will pay off in the end. If you keep this car and keep it whole, you will thank me for this advice later. Try to enjoy the weekend.

I have to agree with Shawn. Emotions are high and I can understand after spending a nice chunk of change just to see it go up in smoke. Relax, take a few deep breaths and dig in to find out what happened and what it will take to fix.No need to throw in the towel over a head gasket or a piston or two. I'm sure you will find that with the help from DR and the rest of this great community you will be back up in no time. This is a special car you have and it needs to stay that way.
I for one am willing to help you out anyway I can and am willing to donate any parts or services that I have to you to help you get back to good.I am also sure there will be many others that feel the same way.

Yes, I would like to know what the heck really happened. I was drooling over this 928 a month or so ago.

So sorry to hear about your trouble. Darn it.

The car is non-intercooled and was switched to run an 8psi pulley, right? The intake temps probably got a little too high, and the early LH cars did not have any knock control.

Stephen,
Bad news and I knew how much you were enjoying driving the car.
This car is a very special car and I would enforced what has been said already - this car needs to be kept whole.
I have seen the car many times when owned by DR and Ed. A very special car and DR kept it in the very best condition and I know ED did also.
You cannot go wrong with DR's help - he knows the car better than anyone and he has already offered to help. He has an amazing knowledge on all matters 928. Use his expertice to find out what has happened and along with the help of this amazing group you can get it right again.
I would like to follow Ed's lead and offer the supply of some parts free as a contribution and other parts at cost as a way of helping you move forward.
Roger

I am not going to comment on asking price etc, but I do need to clarify a few things to make sure there is correct information being posted to avoid any confusion for potential buyers.

This price you mention is for a Production 32V Intercooled System with a Custom Cast Intake assembly, the system you have is a Prototype 16v NON-intercooled system with a 3 piece water-jetted intake made from 3 flat pieces of aluminum.

The chips I have provided are always included in the system price, including any updated/revised chips we make at NO charge. In all the systems I have sold I can't recall charging anything for updated or revised chips, and certainly not a grand.

All of the package systems I have sold and will sell are 100% complete and include EVERYTHING you need.

I know the adrenaline is flowing right now(it would be for me too) and I just want to make sure that in all the excitement that the correct information is put out to avoid any disappointment or confusion to a potential buyer.

As mentioned to you earlier I have an 86.5 5.0 short block if you decide to do the hybrid you mentioned, plus other engine parts. I will be happy to work with you on anything you need to get the "Red Car" back on the road to be enjoyed again ASAP.

Cheers,

Dave

Been reading these posts a long time.
Why not find a 68 Pontiac Bonneville to excercise your foot and need for smoke and rubber chunks?
Take it just a tad easier on the 928.

Confirmation/diagnostics would be great, but he sounded pretty confident. From past thread it seemed like the car may have been having an AFR issue, likely it went lean at worst possible time- upper rpm band/lbs. If it gobbled some rings/blasted some lands off, or put a hole in a piston- not sure how I get dropping new ones in with a sleeved block, that would seem to take some extraordinary luck.

DR would have tuned the mixture OK, but fitting a higher boost pulley may have raised the intake temps too high for the pistons - like Dan says.

Easy to fix the car, not so easy to fix the wife.

I'm guessing a broken ring-land since that was quite a common issue when boosting early cars.

When was the smaller diameter pulley installed on the blower?
