Default PSA: alloy vs coppy 'torpedo' fuses - an observation

In my randomness, while pulling apart this early fuse panel, I noticed something interesting.

All the copper fuses looked great with no oxidation.

On the other hand, the alloy ones were horrible corroded!

Curious.

I'm not sure what the alloy is... or if it's just tin.

Anywho, FWIW, may be worth using only copper is still available.

Oxidation and dissimilar metal corrosion, it is common from what I have seen and why Euro mechanics sell fuse panel services.

The copper-only or beryllium-copper fuses suffered greatly from the slightest corrosive environment. The tin-plated copper was a serious upgrade. More than a few green fuses have failed in early Porsche (and other) cars due to corrosive exposure.

And you also learn to unhook the battery before rolling the fuses, man that hurts when one blows while your finger is on it, and hurts for a long time.

Same experiences as Jim. Copper fuses have their lifespan limits. but tin or zinc or whatever seems to be crap

I have been on the hunt to find a source for the glass "Buss" fuses with the pointed ends that will fit in our fuse holders. I know they are out there because I have purchased them locally before but the place I got them no longer stocks them.

Jim, the emke VW fuses from BAP Geon are the right length and seem to hold up ok.

Or are you looking for original, vac-packed examples that haven't seen light of day since Saturday Night Fever was in theaters?

Thanks man! Are the VW copper?

No "concourse fuses" here, Chris.

The original Hella bubble-packed fuses are beryllium-copper. I willed my stash of them to Dan Bise a decade ago. Ping him, since he doesn't have an early-fuses car anymore.

This isn't the brand I used, but look like them. Says they are bronze or brass.

From the photos looks like aluminum foil wrapped fuses. Will corrode, can be used in an emergency to get home. Only.

Now that's a company name you should be able to trust. Love it.

Jim, yes, seem to be copper.

Hi,

Is it possible for someone with a lot of experience and a lot of patience (not me!) to convert an old style CE panel to the later model with blade fuses?

Regards

Now that's attention to detail! I believe I have a big pile of the old fused stashed somewhere, but it wouldn't hurt to get some NOS ones for my future plans. May have to look up Dan. Thanks for the lead.

It is not possible to swap out the fues holders to the new style, while using your old CE panel.
However it may be to swap out your old relay and connector blocks into a new CE panel which has the blade style fuse blocks.
The real trick in doing that would be keeping the rats nest of wires on the backside in order. Oh man, I couldn't even imagine.
