Sorry to hear/see this.

There was fortune (nobody was hurt) and misfortune (car toast)... maybe the humor was an attempt to help bridge the gap.

Hope you get all this behind you soon.

So sorry to hear this, glad to hear everyone is OK that is the most important thing.

I had an instance with fuel smell too, my rail fuel gauge was not sealed 100% at the threads and was spraying a fine mist of fuel onto my distributor cap. Was tough to see the leak because it would evaporate before I could see it. I caught it before it went boom, thank god for new cap/rotor and wires!

Indeed it was. I'm British. We always look for humor, even in our own misfortune.

Hopefully you had comprehensive insurance coverage and this will be a covered event.

Get another one.

Glad you nipped it in the butt before anything bad happened.

No worries, I guess all we can do is just laugh it off.

Yeah, I am covered Insurance wise. Cars can be replaced, its the ordeal that leaves a scar, especially when your child is with you. I can't tell you how stupid I feel for letting this happen.

SO GLAD nobody was hurt.

But so everyone else hears this...NEVER EVER open the hood with a fire under it.

Ever.

(Unless you have the gear, and training to do it safety)
I am a trained fire first responder, and approve of this message.

With any luck...wife MIGHT accept a fix, or if not..steer the insurance claim to 928Int to use as donor organs.

So sorry to read and see this. Good you and your daughter are okay. And good on you--in an emergency situation, you did things right and made sure your daughter was safe.

It never occurred to me that until the fuel pressure is relieved, it will continue to squirt. Again, glad you're okay.

I think Randy or someone should make this thread a sticky for a while so some good can come from this. A lot of new users might not be aware...

Ather:

ARGH! And we were just talking about having you come over for an examination in a week or so, not that I would have found a problem with your fuel lines.

And, just to put another spin on this, you can't be certain it was the one you didn't replace. That U is has a semi-rigid polyamid core, and unless it is manipulated and kinked, it should be good for just about forever. I have mixed feelings about replacing some of the fuel lines with aftermarket alternatives. Yours is not the first one in the area to have a fire soon after replacing fuel lines.

So sorry to hear about this, but I'm very glad you and yours are OK.

Good to read that your daughter and yourself escaped unharmed which is the only real thing that matters, 928's/car's can always be replaced.

Also many thanks for posting this, good for us all to be reminded.

Accidents do happen (I very recently rearranged several bodypanels, and now have to admit that the factory did had all their shapes right from the start), hindsight is always a wonderful thing.

Terrible...but could have been much worse. VERY glad you and your daughter are okay. Don't let this deter you from another 928. Those fuel lines LOOK fine but when they are off and in your hand just a little bending and I assure you cracks are there.

Man sorry to hear this car-fire issue has bitten you. Its one of those things that everyone preaches about [replacing ALL the lines], and no one seems to take seriously. 36psi on the rail (or 55 in your case) is a lot of fuel for a fire and even when you turn the ignition off there is still a few seconds worth of pressure. Never underestimate the speed and intensity of a fuel driven fire. Unfortunately another car has to die because of fuel line fire (or in your case a fuel system fire.)

The silver lining is that your daughter was not injured, and the car is insured. With your payout you could probably fix it. I have seen some cars that were rescued from firedeath and you would have a hard time detecting the damage after they were finished. Just take a few days work out the insurance issues and spend some quality time with the kid. Maybe you will reconsider in a few days and decide to rescue the car.

Very sad to see your pride and joy go like that.
Glad you are all ok.
Give it some time and you will be able to get another.
