$44.95 Bosch H4 pair on ebay
I received yesterday a set of Bosch H4's I bought on ebay, from "busdepot", such as item 120698417627. If this is something you are looking for then buy without reservation, they are new, contain the rear boots, and they ship the bulbs for an extra $10. Not a bad deal for H4 assemblies.
I also extracted my 23rd wasp nest from inside the lamp assembly. Huge. Probably a great place to live (for a wasp).

Apparently these are DOT/SAE, but made for motorcycles.
Link to ebay, $60 a pair shipped with bulbs, $52 without, shows 17 left.

From what I read here and elsewhere all of these H4 Bosch and Hella lamps, incl. those sold by the vendors, say "motorcycle" on them. Apparently they were never DOT approved for cars.
Regardless they throw plenty of light but without the diffusion of sealed beams; more like modern headlamps, razor's edge at the top, good road view, not a lot of "in the air" light being thrown around.

Follow-up, this guy:

Spent a good bit of time demonstrating the difference between Motorcycle and Auto headlamps. The result is interesting, they aren't very different at all except at high beam.

These are 7" H4s just lenses/reflectors not frames - these presumably can replace sealed beam 7" lamps on Pre S4 USA cars.
Its not a bad deal - but they are also motorcyle types - so not a perfect match.

Old discussion, but may be a newer one in the last couple weeks.

I had Bosch 7" H4s on mine for almost 10 years. They are EXCELLENT upgrade for the sealed beams. One of the local parts stores used to carry them as a kit, even the pulbs were included for $99CDN. BUT this is back when the CDN was worth 40% less than the USD. I've sold about 10 kits before they were no longer available. They should be a direct drop in for the sealed beams, no modifications to anything what so ever.
By the way, these are a huge improvement even compared to the H5 that the S4-ups have.

The 8" e-code lamps are not cheap.
The 7" e-code are _much_ cheaper (reasonable, imo) and will throw much better light than the the H5 8". Absolutely best bang for the buck if you can't pull the trigger on the 8" e-code and care more for night vision than appearance (I do love the look of 8", but I'd buy 7" H4's before 8" H5's.)
