Default Paper Fender washers needed. Where to buy?

Need NEW paper washers that isolate the fender bolts from the aluminum fender. I would think even nylon would work. These will be for my son's repainted 1980 model. The old ones just look terrible. Can't find any anywhere. Any guidance would be very appreciated.

I used rubber ones but they are proving a poor substitute as they are drying out and coming apart.

Hi Dean. Nice to see you are still upright. I can make you some washers out of 1/16th inch ABS black plastic, or maybe even white if you like, but I'll need to get that material first. I have the black. What size hole do they need and how big around would you like them to be? I can make them at about 15 or 20 at a time in the lathe in no time. How many do you want? Happy to help. Let me know.

Jerry...you are the man! You have helped me so much on his car. Its truly appreciated and you are on my list of people to thank when this is done. Let me go get one off my car and get dimensions. Black would be fine.

Great, Dean; and I don't think they will look homemade, either. I have been making washers out of my scrap ABS plastice off and on for a long time and now have several jars full of them. I give them to my trim guy for use in his auto trim projects and use a few around here. I haven't made any out of 16th yet because I haven't been making anything out of that to have scrap from. I do have some material though that I can work up for your project.

Have a look at these and see if they will work-

If not, try an electronics hardware supplier- fiber
washers are used in motors ( adjust end play) etc.

a drill bit hole saw will cut a perfect circle with a perfectly centered hole from the guide bit.
i have made similar type washrs to keep dissimilar metals seperated.

there are also nice gasket punch sets that cut perfect circles, up to one inch diameter..

get some thick rubberized sheet gasket material and away you go,,,

what is the washer diameter, and what size hole..

i would be happy to make you some sweet ones..

Looks like 7/8" outside diameter would be great ( a little larger than stock as shown in photo) with a 1/4" diameter hole. This one is off my car and it tore into 3 pieces getting it off. Looks like I could REALLY use 18 of them for Garrett's car. PLEASE let me send you some money for these.

OK, Dean. I'll go out and make these after dinner and get them in the mail for you tomorrow. I'll need your address again, by PM.

I'll make you some of the ruberized gasket type, and you can try jerry's abs ones as well. try them out and let us know which works better...

Just for information, the way I make washers out of ABS plastic and it could work with other stuff, even aluminum or other metal, is to start with a short piece of round bar stock, usually aluminum, and chuck it in the lathe, then drill and tap a hole in it the size of the bolt that will be the size of the hole in the washer, a quarter inch in this case. Then I cut strips of the material, say about one inch wide in my band saw then take the strip and drill holes in it spaced about an inch or slightly more from each other all along the strip. Then I cut the strip or strips, into segments betweeen the holes so I end up with little squarish pieces with a hole in approximately the middle. Then I put a bunch of them on the bolt that I then screw into the rould bar still in the lathe until it is very tight then simply turn the squarish pieces down to the desired od. Then remove the bolt and take the finished washers off and do it again.

In this case I already have the mandrell with the quarter inch threaded hole in it so all I need to do is cut a couple of 18 inch or 2 foot strips of 16th inch ABS and drill all the holes in it in my mill using it like a drill press. Then I'll cut the strips up into individual pieces and proceed as described above.

It's really good therapy at times, and this might be a good one for that. I'll post a picture when I have some done for Dean.
