Default The Search Begins - Fever to start later

Hello All!

I am starting a new thread as suggested by a few other members to begin my search for a 928.

I believe the car I want is a 1989 or 1990 Auto with LSD if possible. I don't really have a color preference, but am partial to the darker colors. The only reason for the 90 would be the airbags which I would like. I still have yet to look or drive one of these cars.

I have researched this site for the last 6 months to determine common faults with the 928 and am not afraid of these cars or the maintenance involved. My first car when 16yo was a SAAB 900 EMS Turbo, which of course was a maintenance nightmare, so I understand just what might be involved with ownership. I do believe Porsche build quality should be a little better than the SAAB, but still understand high maintenance/high parts cost. The SAAB bit the dust when 5th gear went out and I couldn't figure out how to get the tranny apart. Being 16, I did not have the money for a rebuild from a shop. But, I have been working on cars ever since.

So that is it. Have access to a shop and tools, and the car would be stored inside and a weekend driver. If anyone has any more suggestions for me to begin the search, I would much welcome them. Mostly I just watch ebay and craigslist, but am very fearful of buying a car unseen.

One thing I have not considered is getting one of these cars from/in Germany. I have easy access to fly over there, so that would be no problem. Anyone have any experience in this?

Take care and thank you in advance.

Rick.

I've heard its not so bad bringing in a 25+ year old car, something I think also is different at 21, but USA is not friendly to self importing. If your military you might have some kind of loophole to work. Generally the market to buy from is Japan due to the high cost of keeping an older car there.

Drive some 928's. Most people here end up with a FIRM preference on multiple issues, especially auto vs manual.

Why do you want LSD? In almost any normal driving you will never know you have it or not.

With the current exchange rate, you're much better off buying the car in the States--unless you're looking for a 92 GTS.

For the air bag, it's been discussed a few times how well a 20+ year old air bag is and whether the gas used to blow up the bag is flamable.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out the "sticky" thread on FAQ from new users. Tons of tips there. Good luck! / Bruce

PS - If you're wondering what the difference is between years, this picture should help

Welcome!

You would be better off finding a car in the US. Over here 928’s in general have higher mileage and/or are more expensive than in the US.

I know you're fully evolved Kev. Even though you never had a GTS! Since I have a S, I'm just starting to get a little more erect.....

I'll chime in. I'm also on the lookout for a 928. Specifically, a 5 speed with no sunroof.
