Default Center Console red key light/button? - What is it?

My buddy asked me what the redkey icon next to the "I" warning light (center console) on his car is - 1985 5 speed? I searched a little but could not find it. I think it is for the central lock system after a little reading but could not really tell for sure.

Is this a difficult thing to trace and fix? Or is this something entirely different.

Mucho Gracias.

There is this thing called an owners manual... It has many answers to easy questions such as this... I think it probably covers EVERY BUTTON IN YOUR CAR...and then some! Seriously, if you don't have a manual, go get one off ebay for your model year and if you do then you should really do yourself a favor and read it. You will learn all kinds of cool things about your car!

He is currently a poor 928 owner - self employed Contractor in California. - rest my case. He really cant afford one right now so I thought I would ask for him. I did buy him a calendar though for xmas.

Anyone know where to download one for a 1985?

Ugh...that sucks! He didn't get an owners manual with the car?! That is just WRONG! Well, at least the calendar will brighten his holiday! Get him an owners manual off of ebay as a stocking stuffer!

^^^^^
I was out of work for over 2.5 years... I feel your pain! Just getting caught up now! If this job/career will last as long as the last one then I'll easily be able to retire at the end of this gig. I really enjoy what I am doing (again...same thing I did before I was laid off) and like the company so I hope it will last a good long time!

While its true you can learn a lot from the owners manual - It actually doesn't tell you much more than that this is the central locking button. Nothing on what the expected behaviour is, what it does when the car is powered off? Vs. when the ignition is on.. what about if one door or hatch is open... the same is true of the alarm system - you may know you have one - but not what exactly it does... what does it monitor? how does it alarm? how do you know if the alarm went off while you were away?... etc etc. I think Porsche left out some important details...

just an opinion; but if an owner is too poor for an owners manual how does he afford to maintain a 27 year old car?

Andrew Olsen has soft copy versions of the owner's manuals here:

Default Lit or Not?

I have seen it lit up when the locks are locked on one 928, AND, I have seen it lit up with the locks are NOT locked on another 928. Same year (86.5). I like the latter - it matches the visible orange-red patch on lock ***** of modern cars when they are unlocked.

Oh, and if he presses the button, he will hear the "dying droid" sound of the locks cycling to either lock or unlock.

Owners manual??? I don't have one either. You can't maintain a 27 year old car with an owners manual? You maintain it with perseverence and forums like this.... That don't mock someone attempting to save an old porsche...

No offense but a porsche is a porsche and an owners manual doesn't help anyone, after about oh the first 6 months, if you have a brain, and some ingenuity....

No brain, little ingenuity- yep, that's the right diagnosis for me, because when I finally did download an Owner's Manual from Andrew's site (and thank you again for that service, AO!) I did learn a couple of new things. But not, as Alan points out, about what the little key switch actually does... So don't knock noobs, emulate NoVector's example and try to contribute more than criticism.
