Default Painting the front clip cost?

Anyone know about what it costs to paint the front clip in two stage black on a later '87+ 928? Is the two stage black hard to match? Thanks

It will depend on who you have do it.

Black can be tricky to match.

Stan, looking at a black car that has a lot of road rash on the front. Trying to get an idea of what costs to just repaint the front clip in black with a clearcoat.

Colin, thanks for your reply - no doubt the cost can vary greatly, just looking for ballparks on cost. You'd think black would be an easy match but I guess not...

$1200 should get you there at a well-reputed shop.

So the later cars are two stage? My 86.5 is single stage.

Fred, I've been shopping around for paint and the prices are all over the place (I've seen anywhere from $4500 to $25000 to do a repaint of my car and I don't have a personal recommendation but Erik does). I think Randy is about right on price for the front clip. It's probably the easiest part of the car to disassemble.

If you want, you can do the disassembly yourself to save more money. I don't think it would take more than a long afternoon to pull bumper cover, hood and fenders.

Are you having them stripped and repainted or just repainted? If stripped, then they have to prime the aluminum properly, so you have to find a shop that knows aluminum.

Matt, the fenders and hood have some rash so the rash on them could probably be filled and just sanded down like Erik did on his car. The front bumper cover is full of rash and needs to be stripped. I don't know when Porsche started using the two stage but this one definately is.

Randy, thanks for your input, very much appreciated.

I had my front bumper cover repainted when I hit the front driver's side corner into the house. I turned it into my insurance so I only had to pay the $500 deductible. A local body shop's bill was around $1400. They removed the cover and repainted it, replaced the 2 black light trims and a cracked grill piece, new bead and installed new bumper shocks. It looks great and matches perfect.

Fred, what I have done with the font and rear bumper is bought used ones from 928 International. Then I stripped it myself. Easy to do, but it's a mechanical process (chemicals might screw up the plastic). This might be cheaper than having a shop strip it. Or you can see if they have a good black one.

I am experimenting with doing some home painting with my cheap bumpers and a TPTools turbine HVLP paint system.

I have a guy next to me who would repaint it for $200,
Then the next guy would be $1200.

The difference is the first guy would be masking it off and respraying. He would not be removing it.

This is such a broad question that you just need to go and talk to a number of body shops and get an idea.

Why would you take the fenders of for a repaint? I can understand taking the bumper off to put it new moulding and reduce overspray and also to do the bottom of the light buckets.
Am i missing something?

I would not be removing any of the fenders as they are glued onto the subframe no need to make more rattles and disturb body integrity.
remove the nose and then paint the fenders and hood in place.
If there are a lot of paint chips then taking it down to bare metal may be the best way of restoring the finish,
and if Fred is gonna own a black car this would be the only way to go as it offer the least possible chances for a fouled up paint surface after its painted,
