Rob I just got what your last option code was. Very inventive. I think this would drive the price out of the range of a 928 newbie.

I just saw this in the classifieds. I do not have any first hand knowledge of this car.

Thanks everyone for the good advice and running dialog.

I am in So Cal. Besides the difficulties buying from out of state, and the condition considerations for the snow states, I am very concerned about emissions. CA is very stringent and the cost of getting one accepted here could dig deep into the budget which would otherwise go to other needs. That being said I will bring the right car from the right seller in if I can do the due diligence with some testing before the car ships.

As for patience, I can wait for the right car. Not black for sure. Airbags for sure (I know, I know, they may not even work, plus the early airbags are nothing like today's, but it simply isn't negotiable).

As for price, I will pay a fair price. Low to mid 20s looks to be right for a clean car with 50 to 70k miles and up to date services. I would love one of Willhoit's GTS's but 30k and up is too much.

Thanks again everyone for the input and please keep making suggestions and giving me homework to do!

As long as the car was originally sold in the USA, you should be fine. The emissions issue is with grey market imports, and of course cars with smog equipment removed or altered.

SoCal is a great place to be for a 928, very active group of owners, 928Intl and Precision Motorworks (Greg Brown), plus lots of 928's on the market.

A nice 90+ 928 with 50k to 70k for low to mid $20k may take you some time. What I usually suggest is to focus more on the nice than the $$$. Nice cars are rare, and sell quickly at reasonable prices.

I agree, a really nice condition GT will be more difficult to find in that price range. You might consider looking for a nice 87-88 S4 5SPd. Nice ones do pop up and will be below your range which will give you some funds to repair anything needed and get the car hauled from another state (if needed). Good luck with the search.

Interesting. The Seller doesn't have much first hand knowledge of the car either. He lists the tranny as "tiptronic". Also, no engine shots. I am not convinced that this S4 is worth the premium being asked for it.

The "tiptronic" is a Rennlist Classified function, not the seller function. I had my 928 listed that way as well.

It's probably not that clean but I'm sure it can be easily brought back since he hasn't had it that long and has only driven it 1k miles.

Mechanically the car is excellent, only thing I think it needed was maybe a clutch slave cylinder but I suspect that fresh fluid and proper bleeding of the system may be enough to resolve the issue I had with it once. Let me know if you're interested.
If it's the same gent that had it at last SITM, he told me was entertaining selling it back then even.

I believe Rod (the current owner of Ashfin/Tom F's GT) is interested in selling it - talked with him at Frenzy, and he indicates it's just "too nice" for him to consider driving very much.

Gary did you see the car at Frenzy this year? I had suggested to Rod that he go and advertise it there.

Curious to know if it's still shiny and clean.

Afshin,
I saw it at the Frenzy too. The car looks great!

He drove it in the rain that day.....
