If you are constantly revving up to 5000 rpm, you probably would have toasted gears. My engine is rarely over 3000 and then only when accelerating. If your "toasted" gears are because you are constantly way up on the speed scale, well, you probably deserve the traffic tickets and the roasted gears. And, while I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather, greg, I've learned to keep the speed reasonable.
PS, it is not the speed that kills the gears, it is from running loose, as I am sure yours are.
When set to the proper tension the belt on a 928 feel far tighter than any other engine I have worked on, and that is a lot of engines.
