I've seen more Audi's with sized water pumps than 928's (the ones shipped from the factory with the tensioner used in the Porkensioner).

I've used the Kempf tool for about 8 years on several of the 928's I've had. Never any issues, or failed components. I found (all '87 and later cars) that the Kempf tool needs to be ~90% of the "full tightness window" in order to match the Porsche specs (The first 5-6 times I did this with the Kempf tool, I cross checked tensions with a friends Porsche 9201 tool).

Why shouldn't I? The entire thread is a technical discussion. Wouldn't it be easier to admit that you were wrong than trying to pull the old "It was just a joke" routine?

This is not a joke, I have seen 2-3 times as many WP failures on the VW 1.8-2.0L as any other brand, far in second place on the failure list is the inline 6 BMW's, the difference in these and the 928 is that it seldom does any other damage as long as they do not run them until they stop from overheating.

VW waterpumps are junk... Reman'd units are even worse... Including their t-stat housings... cheap plastic isht...

I am one of the ones that likes to have the warning light in case of a water pump failure. However, sometimes I wish I went with the Porken tensioner, simply because its simple to install and you don't have to worry about the belt tension. My warning light did come on during a high RPM run on the highway(about 5000). Turned out that the pump was failing, impeller was grinding against the pump body, it was machining the pump. That was a brand new Laso pump too, with only 20,000 miles on it. I retensioned the belt since new at about 4 or 5000 miles since the install, because the warning light came on. Tension was in the middle of the window. I missed the initial 1500 mile retension.

If you are constantly revving up to 5000 rpm, you probably would have toasted gears. My engine is rarely over 3000 and then only when accelerating. If your "toasted" gears are because you are constantly way up on the speed scale, well, you probably deserve the traffic tickets and the roasted gears. And, while I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather, greg, I've learned to keep the speed reasonable.
