Default 2 torques of steering tie rods?...

Hi, sun is setting here. I was trying to find which torques for this two nuts in the picture. I'm a bit confused about what I see in the wsm.

Could anybody confirm the torque of this two nuts (part #1 is 19mm size and part #22 is 22mm size for reference) if you know the torque in ft/lb no problem, I will do the conversion. Thanks.

WSM, Vol 4, page 48-02:

Piece 22 - 'Tie rod to ball joint', 45Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Piece 1 - 'Tie rod to steering arm', 65Nm (47 ft-lbs).

Thank you Borland, that's what I found but when I see 'M14' on Tie Rod to ball joint 45NM, that's what make my doubt, I thought mine was 22mm not 14 on that nut.

I should be mistaken, I will use that thanks!.

Don't confuse thread size with wrench size.

Personally, on my S4, I would not use that much torque on piece 22. Half that amount would be more than adequate.

Borland:

On the S4, what tools you need to replace the inner rod?

Porsche special tool #9183 (wrench socket) is specified by WSM to tighten the inner rod to the steering gear to the specified torque of 150Nm. No counterhold is specified.

I made such a tool from a 32mm crowsfoot....

Thanks Borland.

I'll go buy one, and prep it...gonna do this in a few weeks.

Other than the rod..do I need part '8' in there as well, the spacer? I have vertical movement right now, that im pretty sure is just the 'rod' part itself I need to replace.

Don't know about part 8, check any maintenance history and the PET for your year car.

This tool sold on UK eBay looks to do the trick...

no, it's a 32mm. Link is correct.

Look at the RENNLIST thread I referenced above. Explains in more detail.

I just used a large pipe wrench and put a much force on it as I dared. Counterhold the steering rack.

I've tightenned all those to "Good n tight". Inner tie rod was counter held and I used an adjustable wrench. Counter holding it is probalby the most important here.

Cool, that seals it. I'm definitely buying a set of large crowfoot wrenchs. Sunex make one available through an Amazon retailer which is cheap and covers the 24/27/30/32 sizes.

I want them to torque the oil coolerhoses correctly too.
