Sound advise. WP's spun by belts are notorious for puking its seal upon tension changes, even low mileage ones. I have had it happen more often than not.

I wouldn't buy a used water pump, not even if it was just a year old, but I HAVE left on a water pump that looked good during a TB change. I would not do it again even on a non interference car. My reasoning was leaving it on was worth the risk vs broken bolts etc from taking one off.

Hold on a second. Is this the ORIGINAL water pump from 1989?! I saw your sig "89 S4 61k".

I have no problem leaving a good 60K mile water pump alone, but not one from 1989. Your 89 sat so much, I'd be real worried about a lot of engine parts, especially if the coolant went unchanged for many years. I'd want to take that water pump off and examine the cast iron impeller, so you might as well change it.

When I bought my 83 five years ago, it had 60K miles on it. I changed out the original TB and inspected what I could of the original WP. without dissasembly. The car has run another 60K miles on that pump without any issues. When I replace the TB this winter I will replace the WP w/120K miles on it.

Water pump is out, looks good and feels good, but will be replacing with a new laso from Roger, the impeller is metal on the original pump vs plastic on the laso.
