Default Bosch Long Haul Alternators - anyone tried one?

I found something possibly interesting... these alternators (with J180 mounts) have interesting design goals: 160A spec with high temperature performance with good idle generating power at down to 1500-1800 alt RPM (80A) and rotation to 18,000 alt rpm allowing up to at least 2.7:1 pulley ratios.

I haven't tried one and haven't even been able to compare case size and fitment - but its clearly a different fitment that would require a reworked adjuster mechanism - so not sure if it would work - but it seems like the kind of thing we really need. Whilst designed for commecrial trucks I think its a pretty good match to the 928 elect system requirements...

With 2.7:1 crank pulley ratio this will spin at 1800rpm or better even in low idle revving GTS engines.

Anyone fit any other J180 style case alternators?

Looks awfully "open" for a bottom of the bay install.

Maybe the innards can be installed in the original housing?

Looks like the one Carl shows in his instructions for the 200 AMP HO upgrade.

Actually it looks very different to me - the case is about 1/3 plastic on Carl's - the Long haul has a 2 part metal case with plastic back + the front plate venting style is different..

The B+connector seems to on the side on Carl's while on the Bosch all electrical is on the back.

Carl's does look a bit like a 180 mount..

Open is good for airflow - really they all have to be open to airflow (one way of the other) - with a belly pan on its actualy pretty well protected.

The 928 alternator lives under the exhaust manifold in a tight compartment. Pulling 300 deg air thru doesn't sound like "cooling" to me. I think that I will keep the cowl and cold-air intake on mine.
