Default What Brand of T-Belt to buy?

Back in the day, it was said to only use the Porsche factory T-Belt, has the consensus changed?

Factory Porsche belt. Seeing the 'Porsche' printing through the vent/inspection holes just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Didn't Gates make the belts for Porsche ?

Gates is good. If you want to spend more get Porsche.

There is also a 'racing' belt that is supposed to be even stronger.

Gates Racing Belt.... from Roger. Roger will try to talk you OUT of buying it since it hasnt been in our cars for very long and he cant vouch for the longevity (yet)... Its around $160 compared to the regular belt (approx $40). The technology is there and I think its worth the minimal "gamble" that I WONT have to change it again anytime soon... like almost FOREVER...

I've had a Conti belt stretch. I think Porsche=Gates, though I don't remember why I think that.

I too have had Conti's stretch a bit - 3 months after installation, and the engine running a total of about 30 minutes total during that time, a new belt had stretched from top end of spec to bottom end of spec.

The original belts (and to my knowledge, all the replacement belts) are reinforced with fiberglass (anyone remember fiberglass belts in the bias belted tires of the 70's!! Lots of belt breakage problems then). According to Roger's research, the Porsche replacement belt is made by Gates. The Gates racing belt is reinforced with Kevlar. Kevlar is very strong, and as flexible as nylon or polyester. Also has very little stretch. One of it's many uses in addition to bullet proof vests is to anchor off shore drilling platforms.

Having destroyed a motor because of Conitbelt stretch, I will say that I think they could be used as long as you: a) watch the tension like a hawk for the first 1000 miles or so, or b)use a porkensioner. The stretch, by itself, is not a problem except that the factory tensioner does not maintain tension. But why?

Heinrich,
I hope to God that you are kidding about that. I have also had issues with a Conti belt stretching. I could NOT keep my '89 digital dash from lighting up with a toothed belt warning. A digital dash toothed belt warning WILL make your butt grab your seat when it come on.

Please please please, do yourself a favor and put a decent timing belt on that engine.

Yea man, it is a forever thing, just do it once and it is done.

I do not even know where to start with that, so let me just say, good luck.

Heinrich,
You wouldn't want to put a new but old belt on anyway. Sell those Conti's to a 16 valver owner that won't matter to the engine if the belt screws up.

And you'll thank us all in the long run.

Greg, I saw that post. I'm just putting gas in my car one time. It's a forever thing, right? The technology is there. Sorry Jbrob007, you might want to rethink that if you plan driving your car very much or for very long.
