I have seen 160 MPH, which was pretty close to the limit for both car and driver, Car had more to give, but the driver had reached the fear of death and or Jail speed limiter.
Stock auto will run almost 140 before shifting into 4th with a 2.20, or so I have been told.

When stock my 89 S4 (auto 2.54) max'd out at 165.8 MPH, at 6000 RPM. This was at 5000 feet altitude. For a stock S4 motor, peak HP is at 6000 RPM.

My Euro S2 auto is geared for 20.8mph/1000rpm in 3rd (changes up at WOT at about 120mph. 4th gear is geared for 30mph/1000rpm. So at the rated 155mph the engine is only at 5,160 rpm. I doubt it has the grunt to go any higher. ever put it to the test !

I just wanted to say this video took place on a close course!!!

I recall my 2.20 auto would shift from 3rd to 4th at about 140mph....just like the video..but it did take WAY longer....

I've had a stock auto up to 290kmph. I checked via rpm/tire size.
It was cold, had a long long stretch.

So the general consensus is that my 87 now has a faster top speed with the 2.73 5 speed VS the 2.20 auto.
I know it accelerates MUCH better.

The 2.20 5 speed sure could use a gear between 4th and 5th. There are very few times you would need it though.

Tony's car sure goes good.

All the 928's need a deeply overdriven extra gear, be them manual or automatics.
that is how the Corvettes get such incredible gas mileage.
One of the Corvette guys that went with us last weekend says he averages 32 MPG overall, heck my old 87 will get almost 30 on the interstate.
No reason in the world why some one could not come up with a torque tube based overdrive unit.
I think some one has done that, might be one of the guys that have ten months of winter up in Green Bay.

I was thinking the 2.39 out of my 84 Euro AT would have been great for a high speed car, but never really worked it out before selling it to a guy that just needed a transmission.

Wow, thats with 170k on the clock. I'm just not bad-a$$ enough to keep my foot buried like that. Fear of Death/Police/Big collisions. But that was pretty sweet (replay!)
