Before you get all high-and-mighty, remember that Roger sold rebuilt pumps too once-upon-a-time until this problem became aparant.

He dropped them, we kept them but instead started to pin the impellers to the shafts to offer a lower-cost alternative to our customers.

And I will also remind you we do not know where this failed water pump came from as yet. I have offered to replace it if we do find out it came from us, even though it is long out of warranty. Isn;t that nice?

So I'm not sure why I'm getting **** about this. If you want to say my prices are high - fine, I can accept that. They are. I have no idea where Roger is buying new Lasso pumps at that price, but good for him. Mine cost me more.

I had to replace 2 rebuilt pumps on one of my cars finally a new Laso was the cure,

The rebuilds dont really offer any cost savings as they usually require another tear down to replace them after the bearing moves in the housing,
also the impeller sliding off the shaft can be another failure mode.

Rebuilt pumps were considered good till the failure rates started jumping,
so all i am suggesting is to not try reselling them as they are proved to fail,
I wont install any rebuilt pumps on the pumps that i replace.

You might want to check your supply of new Lasos as they may be coming with the new collars installed thus pinning wont be required

I am sure my Lasso photo is dated. The next time I have a new Lasso come though here, I will update the photo.

For the record, I have sold a fair amount of rebuilt water pumps without a reported failure as yet. I think the re-manufactured pumps still have a niche, with the cash-strapped, or with the guys that are going to sell their car after a few years, or the guys who drive their 928 very rarely. Once pinned in place, the impellers have not come loose.

However, if I knew I was going to keep my 928 for a long time, or I knew I was going to put a lot of miles on it - I'd install a new pump too.

Laso didn't start making water pumps for Porsche until the 996 came in to production, they are now the main supplier for the 996/997/991/955/986/987's and decided a few years back to make their own castings for the 928. MPG is the one who made all the pumps and still do, when you order a $1000.00 pump from Porsche, that is who made it. At least until now, Porsche may have got smart and started to buy from Laso and mark them up $750 bucks.

The new Laso with plastic impeller has been available for over a year now.
Sean is correct Laso were never OEM to Porsche for the 928 pump - every other pump but not the 928.

The Laso pump is readily available from the three main wholesalers. I pay about $200 - $220 depending on quantity. I sell for $285. So about a 25% Gross margin which is about normal for all the large sellers in the market. We sell between 20 and 35 a month.

I refuse to sell any rebuilt pump because of all the failures. It does not matter that the impeller is pinned to the shaft as the whole seal cartridge can migrate - shaft and all.

The only rebuild I will sell is Ed's "Guardian" pump as it was rebuilt correctly and proffesionally. However the price is not always palatable to most owners.

I don't assume your supplier of rebuilt water pumps was the same as mine, as we have yet to have our first rebuilt water pump failure. So wherever all these rebuilt water pump failures came from, it wasn't us. Somebody was selling inferior-quality cheap rebuilds.

Of course, there are always those who will shop only cost regardless of quality, and to them they must be willing to accept the consequences of that decision.

Yeah, IIRC there is double-sided tape used to put them on, so you may have to do a little work, but I think you should still be able to use them.

Dear Pyzik, Welcome to Rennlist. It is unfortunate that you received this introduction on you very first thread.
Right now, you can see, that there is a bit of a pissing match going on that has nothing to do with you.
Let me assure you that the people involved are all stand up guys. They are just a little heated right, and are not putting there best foot forward
Hope you will stick around to see. We need more Chicago guys.
