Default Any benefit to using a lead substitue additive or similar?

Any benefit to using something like this for the early engines (1978 and 1982 928)?

Also I read somewhere that late 70's/early 80's "euro" german cars had more power than U.S. version due to de-tuning for fuel differences. Was this due to the lack of lead? Sulfer in U.S. gas? other?

Thanks!

Got an oxygen sensor or catalyst? Lead poisons those. Big reasons why we have unleaded gas these days.

Original CIS cars (not 928) came without any exhaust feedback and without catalysts. The US market demanded better and better tailpipe numbers as the years went by, so unleaded fuel was mandated to support the catalysts and sensors. Other places in the world didn't have the same sensitivity to billowing clouds of tailpipe junk, and didn't have the infrastructure to support unleaded fuel use. Some of the latest ROW 928 cars support the option of using a fixed mixture reference in lieu of an oxygen sensor, no catalysts, for those spots in the world where unleaded fuel stiill isn't common.

Dr Bob,

Lead is not part of gasoline. It was added to stop cars from knocking when compression and metal were less. Lead is a pure poison. Part of the pollution clean up was to eliminate lead from gas and not to promote catalytic converters - that was just a coincidence that lead also poisoned catalytic converters.

The Catalytic Converter is truly a miracle of engineering. It cuts unburned hydrocarbons and NOX by over 90%

Lead is also a great octane booster..but..there are better ways to solve that problem too.

Lead is bad.

Swapped engines on an 81 model GMC truck. Used motor from 79 model Chevy. Truck had a small block 305, Chevy has small block 400. The difference was the 79 400 did not have emissions and the 81 did and required unleaded. To run the 400 on unleaded I had to have the valve seats hardened. Because I could get the 79 motor emissions exempt I installed the 79 motor like it was installed in the 79, i.e., sans all emissions plumbing, pumps, and cats.

The other problem with leaded fuel or use of lead additives is deposits in the combustion chamber, including on the spark plugs. Clearances being what they are in these engines and general desire to minimize spark plug maintenance is another reason the answer is "No".
