Default 16v Exhaust Options / Opinions -Done - Added Pics

Folks,

I am now looking to upgrade my exhaust setup. There are lots of threads for 32v options and experience but not as many for the 16v series. That being said, based on the research that I did find some potential options. Here's my requirements:
  • Need Catalytic converter
  • Works with MSDS headers
  • Has a good low rumble - sounds good at speed
  • Minimize 'droning' sound at high RPMS
  • Minimize scavenging
  • Focus on low-end torque vs high-end
  • Looks good from underneath (not too bulky and hangs well)
As a reminder, I am running the 5.0L euro hybrid motor.

Some options that I have seen are:
  • Catalytic Converter - Random Technology SuperStainless high flow cats
  • X or H pipe WITH Headers??? Too much? Not needed?
  • Single Y Pipe from the headers (I've read that anywhere from 2.5"OD to 3.5")
  • Dual Pipes?
  • Flowmaster - Magnaflow - Borla Mufflers seem to get higher preference
  • Resonators - Resonator Tips??
. I have identified a good welder/exhaust guy here in columbus so all the tubing will be mandrel bent - stainless steel.

It seems like the possibilites are endless so I appreciate everyone's suggestions and guidance

Yeah, I have posted before on this topic, because I had done several configurations of 16v exhaust before figuring out something that sounded really nice. The car came with an old, rusty Borla kit, that was ok, but a little too quiet. Then the borla rusted out, and I got a regular "turbo" muffler installed in it's place. WAY too quiet. Like driving a Mercedes. Then I put in a Flowmaster, but that was REALLY raspy at full throttle. Sounded great at idle though. My final answer was adding a Monza resonated tip, in addition to the Flowmaster. That gave me the low rumble at idle, but got rid of the raspyness when accelerating. I eventually added MSDS headers, and they didn't change the sound too much. Maybe a little more high pitched sound at mid-range acceleration.

Stock 1979 with MSDS headers, single 3" exhaust, no muffler

Down the highway at 75mph it's quiet.

Brad - Just curious, why do you "need" a catalytic converter? Does Ohio sniff exhaust--and if they did, wouldn't a '79 be old enought to be exempt? On my OB, I had MSDS headers-to Y-pipe-no cat-then Borla cat-back to the tail pipe. Not too loud--just right. Saved a lot of weight ditching the pumpkin and screamed at 4K+ RPM. Loved it! Unfortunately, no dyno results to show you. At the time, I chose Borla due to their life time guarantee and living in Maryland (snow+salt) at the time.

The car runs a little rich so the exhaust fumes can get a bit overwhelming especially if you are running behind me...plus i think my wife would ride with me more but her 'sniffer' is super sensitive and doesn't really enjoy smelling unburnt hydrocarbons!!

Thanks for your feedack on your setup!!

How was the exhaust note? A little higher pitched? Also, do you remember what size pipipng you ran?

thx!

If you run an X you will get a rumble. If you run a Y you will get high pitched wine. Placing the mufflers a couple feet before the tailpipe end will cut down on resonance. If you put the muffler right by the rear fascia, add a resonator up by the trans.

Sounds like you should put a cat at the outlet of each header with an X after that. Put the EGO in the middle of the X. I use magnaflow mufflers, but they aren't quiet. Borla's muffle nicely and don't kill too much power. I'm not a fan of Flowmaster. They sound nice but cost power.

"The car runs a little rich so the exhaust fumes can get a bit overwhelming especially if you are running behind me..." Yeah, I know... I ran behind Brad's "bumblebee" for about an hour and my navigator smelled like his exhaust for the rest of the day - needless to say she wasnt exactly thrilled

Someone PLEASE help him with his exhaust!!!! LOL!!!

Re Cats vs. No Cats:
If you are rich, have you adjusted you A/F (using a sniffer?) Otherwise, you will make your cats work overtime.

Re MSDS:
Could you help me understand what is driving that decision? Are you open to other options?

You get those two things figured out, the cat-back will be easier to work out.

Re cat-back:
Are you prepared for full-custom fab.? Or working with existing OE parts (w/some custom fab. fitment).

What's your budget?

Rich AFR makes hot cats with short lives, especially if you pick on of the high flow low core count cats.

I like Magnaflow, hate flowmaster, Borla is fine.

I was thinking Y, but Greg Brown got such great results with his fancy dual exhaust I am thinking about HX.

Brad,

Your motor I would imagine is putting out more than a stock S4 motor.
I'm just guessing?

It probably needs an exhaust at least equivalent?

What about:

-86/86 Exhaust Manifolds instead of headers.

-X-pipe (I think you'll need a spacer that roger sells for the pass side for this to hook up to the manifolds)

-Don't worry about the cats, get some small bullit mufflers that are about the same size.

Run duals exaust back. (2 1/4 like stock S4s would work)
You can put a muffler around the same place as your car had it originally
There are several 2 in and 2 out polished ones out there. I think magnaflow makes a few. Nice tips and you are done.

Here are a few pics I saved of early model car exhausts for ideas.

Good luck, I'd love to get a ride in your car at OCIC 2012!!

thanks everyone for the input! Chuck, great pics!

Yeah, I had Jkaempf run the sniffer on my setup a few years ago at SITM and it came out spot on. Maybe 'rich' wasn't the best choice of words but when you are running headers with straight pipes only on a CIS system, it doesn't seem to be to forgiving...

I am hoping to get to the fabricator this week...

I do need to get it toned down a bit because I tend to leave very early in the AM for work and I would like to drive the 928 but it's just to damn loud on warm up and my neighbors, wife, kids all were giving me a hard time!! Plus, I don't like Joel's wife smelling like afterburn! hahaha sorry Joel! I tried lettting off the gas!
