Don't look for me at Hwy 41 and I-5. My kid called me last night and apparently only the registered owner can surrender old plates and pick up news ones. So, I'll be staying on 41 into SLO, swap out the plates on his 944 (still registered to me), poke around the Achievement House thrift store for a minute, and then head into LA via Hwy 101. See you all in Diamond Bar!

You face a long stretch with expensive gas stations. This 76 in Carpinteria is by far the lowest price until you get into LA

For you guys heading south on 5, know that it is closed down to one lane at HWY 58 and again at Hwy 119. I plan to go 33 from 46 at Blackwells Corner, a little west of Lost Hills all the way to Maricopa, then to 5. Or, takes Rob's scenic route...

Last time I was on 5, it added over an hour sitting in stop-go traffic... FWIW..
Google maps on your smartphone may give you advance warning to go with a detour.

Bronto, thanks for the gas tip.

33 from 46, I may look into that, a little backtrack out of SLO, but not bad, especially if I can time it to hook up with a 928 train.

With the construction info in mind, here is the Route:

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=CA...=1,2,3&t=m&z=9

Meet at 9a at the gas stop about 1mi west of I5 on 152.

Anyone late? Call me at 831 454 6712, or text.

Anyone wanting to meet at 166 & 5 juuuust north of where I5 meets 99, feel free to contact me at that number and my passenger will provide location data/etc.

Be careful on 33 north of Taft. I haven't driven it in about 3 years, but when I did it was very inconsistent. You could go a few miles on perfect new asphalt good enough for 100 mph and then hit a few miles of nasty potholes bad enough to be called craters, then back to nice asphalt, then back to craters, etc. They could have finished the whole stretch nice since then, but with the shape the state budget is in I doubt 33 would be a priority. I can't say exactly where it is that bad, but it was somewhere south of 41 and north of Taft.

Budget maybe down, but there is an _incredible_ amount of new asphalt down in the SF Bay Area.

Pre-budgeted projects are likely still fully funded the way things feel.

But in the last 3yrs, id be shocked if it wasnt fixed.

Good news is, were not driving 80's vintage Lotus panel-wagons. (Plywood, etc)

Voters drive those Bay Area freeways. 33 between Taft and 41 is desolate. It would be good to hear from someone who's driven it lately.

You bet they vote, I am from the central valley originally and my family are farmers there (Reedley). But this route doesn't fit that. Really, there's NOBODY out there on this road, and the route along 33 has no engineered irrigation, just what they can suck out of the ground. Alfalfa and maybe some grains on large acreage with few residences (voters). And oil fields. It's really not even the central valley since there's a range of foothills separating a lot of 33 from the rest of the west side, it's really a valley in the low Coastal Range.

33 from Taft south is great, and south of Maricopa is one of the great driving roads in So. Cal. That stretch - through the Cuyama valley - is excellent tarmac, straight and with little traffic. You can really open it up and then go through the twisties leading into Ojai. But 3 years ago it was a different story north of Taft.

This is somewhat representative of 33 north of Taft:

Doesn't show any potholes, but you can see that it's a narrow, dirty road used by heavy industry. This is at the "town" of McKittrick.
