I bought one a few years back, cleared up a nagging surging issues under cruise.

If the AFM is bad will cause a ton of black smoke to exit the exhaust? I ran a hose down my AFM and dam it did the car fire right up, however a ton of BLACK somke is exiting my exhaust. I am having trouble getting my car to start, but I was able to get it started after running hose down the AFM.

The air flow meter measures the amount of air going into the motor so a corresponding amount of fuel is dispensed by the injectors to achieve the proper air/fuel ratio. Pushing down on the flap tell the brain, hey LOTS more air coming in, so you get lots more fuel, resulting in a very rich condition and smoke.

I'd maybe check the throttle position switches, but could be a bad air flow meter.

Where are these throttle position switches?

This picture is kinda upside down, but they are the grey boxes with two electrical terminals. One switch detects throttle in idle position, other is wide open throttle.

those switches do little or near nothing. the idle switch just pulls off fuel on decel. (usually disconnect anyway for racing or if you like the little pops in the exhaust on decel and a more gradual rpm fall when reving the motor as it wont have to hunt for the final rpm level) the WOT switch, only enriches the fuel for throttle 75% of full throttle and further (enrichment about 14%)

you havfe a temp II swch problem. check it out with an ohm meter , but i bet it is bad. this is why you can start it with the hose or screwdriver down the AFM. if temp II was ok,, this much deflection would cause it to be so rich it wouldnt start.

So tell me, do I refubish that AFM via that youtube video, or do I try and replace that temp II switch? Please advise...thank you...

your AFM is more than likely ok. sure, there is a slight possiblity that it could be having issues, but probably not. a common failure is the tempII sensor. a very easy test is to put an ohm meter across the tw terminals. its simple. I forget the value, but its someting like 200ohms . basically, i found a resistor of this value, stuck it in there to get scots car to run to the shop for some other issues.
if the AFM is working, as you have seen, you can deflect the AFM flap and see the increase of smoke while running. in fact, take the the entire assembly off the "U" and you can run the car while you push on the flap. gun it, and push the flap with your finger and watch the car accelerate. too much flap, more smoke, not enough, and it starts to misfire.

another EASY test, is to put a meter on the AFM. there should be a voltage at stand still and with the ignition on, car not running. its like 6volts. go full scale (push the flap) and it goes to about 9 volts. if this is the case, your AFM is fine.
