Default Checked mine..

Alan,

Now I had to go and look to my surprise mine came up very clean the silver color on the battery clamp side appears to be a coating that was put on the braided copper wire before it was inserted and clamped down in the clamp.

I think I can live with this one a little longer

Herman,
Well mine is for sure sulphurous oxidation...not just tinning for the contact.

Wether the end was tinned - thats possible before - and yours does look clean - have you always had battery venting connected?

Alan

Mine looks just like yours. Replacement helped a lot.

Alan,

Mine is clean and tinned for the contact as you say - I use the acid neutralising mat on the floor of the box - and yes I have the vent hooked-up to the battery - the last battery (Autozone) lasted 5 plus years (6yr warranty battery) and when I exchanged it for the new one it only was $56 at Autzone.

I clean the battery clamps every two years - use felt pads and petroleum jelly on the clamps

Well I trust your advise so I'll be sourcing the materials. I'm a great believer in the fact that a lot of the electrical gremlins that come about over the years are due to poor connections and staying ahead of the curve is important.

I've ordered some SGX positive supply cable online - found a place that has no minimum order:

http://www.wireandsupply.com - they have SGT and SGR also in various sizes, shipping was reasonable too.

Another example of why one should replace battery ground cable as routine maintenance.

Received these from Brillman company. Nice, heavy, and affordable.

Imagine what's lurking underneath that old shrink wrap....

Wow

Yikes

More yikes

Hello hlee96,

In your photo, where did you get the shorter ground strap without the battery terminal? I am assuming you are using that for the engine to frame ground strap?

I recently installed a new Porsche ground strap in the Red Witch, but am going to order the Waytek 36282 16" ground strap. I would like to use a ground strap as well for the engine ground.

Thanks!

Just read through this thread and it prompted me to check my [original] ground strap.

When I purchased this car some 11 years ago I noticed that the heat shrink was damaged at the end where the strap bolts to the chassis. Never stopped to investigate why- wrapped it with self vulcanising tape called it quits.

Reading Dr Bob's dilemma in this thread lights came on inside the grey matter so pulled the strap and inspected under the tape- urrrgh! About half the thickness of the braid was torn- half thickness twice the I2R losses- heat melts plastic.

One tends to think earth straps as being "non consumables"- wrong!

If any of you still have the original earth straps do yourself a favour and replace them.

Rgds

Seth-- IIRC Roger (and probably 928 International too) have the Waytek straps already made up with the shrink sleeve already installed.

The eye-to-eye straps have bigger holes in them than you might want for the engine-to-chassis ground, so choose carefully. The factory piece is a pretty fine-strand cable for all the flexing that should occur with good motor mounts. I guess I hadn't considered substituting a tinned-copper-braid strap like the Waytek in that location.

Hi dr bob!
Meaning the ground strap for the battery?
Good to know, as I had misunderstood and thought the engine ground could be improved as well.
I had planned on getting a new engine ground strap next time I order parts.

Thanks!

Hi Seth, battery ground cables and "bonding straps" are both found here:
https://www.brillman.com/

Cheaper than Waytek overall with shipping and without minimal purchase required.

I read through some threads regarding engine ground straps, and some from this forum had used these straps instead of the bare copper cable. Not sure how effective they are as compared to regular ones, and I have not installed them yet.

Hope this helps.
