I love the look of success in your picture Adam. Most people wouldn't understand why you put yourself thru the whole process, never mind why you are happy to have succeeded, but the people here know why

The oil dampens the piston movement in the later tensioners. Little check valve in the bottom of the piston allows the the piston to extend freely, collapse slowly. The oil also lubricates the piston and bore so they don't wear/gall/weld together. Oil in the tensioner is important.

Define 'Failed". Haven't fallen off the car? I've opened a few that have been so worn that they needed to be replaced because the o-rings are worn off and the piston no longer moves. That's "failed" in my garage.
It seems the boots get crispy pretty early in life, so it's tough to keep oil inside if the boot gets so tired that it cracks. So put a new boot on it and put the oil back in.
There's a growing flock of cars that have been under-maintained with the attitude that they are bulletproof, and intentionally undermaintaining them is some kind of badge of courage. "Look how well my car still runs even though I never bother to do XXX" Go for it if it spins your prop. In fact, folks should include the bragging on the features list when they tell people about the car. Prospective buyers eat this stuff up!
