Motor mount experience

An interesting subject matter- doubtless the original mounts work perfectly well [until they fail]. In our hot climate they appear to be good for about 5 years or so and then they fail but I have seen them go quicker.
I wanted to try something different to the stock items so I fitted pair of solid rubber mounts from Carl at 928 Motorsports. They do not improve on stock [performance wise] and I suspect that you can feel a little more going on vibe wise compared to stock but I find them perfectly acceptable and would not hesitate to recommend them based on my experience to date.
I have no experience of Roger's solution and I welcome all efforts to improve the economics of 928 ownership. Even if they have limitations and worst case do not have the same service life, there will be some break even point whatever it may be.
I also endorse checking the gearbox mounts- although solid they also seem to go after about 5 or 6 years and you end up with metal to metal contact on the support member I seem to remember.
Regards

Hi Fred,
The solid MM's sold by 928MS are the same as we used to sell. However after the batch of failures we stopped selling them for obvious reasons.
The idea of using the Volvo MM was not my idea but a group of owners on the 928 UK board. They have been using them with great results and no issues for about 6 years.
We have sold over 400 of the Volvo MM's since November last year - so so far so good.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Rog,
Installation failed due reason that cross member was not fully dropped and gearbox wasn't push backwards. Lack of space to fiddle with engine. Erkka was also worried about fingers touching metal and not interested to "test" it during engine installation.
I'll drop cross member during dark, hell freezing winter time. Maybe I'll swap my S3 exhaust manifolds in place at the same time.

Receipts showed new Porsche mounts fitted to our Euro car during 2001.
They were collapsed, pan on x-member, when inspected in 2011.
That's the car that got the Volvo mounts.

The few I've worked on never, the oil pan never actually rested on the cross memeber but rather on the steel housing of the MM. Are you sure the pan was touching it?

I've never seen an oil pan touch a cross member....and I've seen some really flat Porsche mounts.
Anyone got a picture of this?
I'm starting to think I must live under a pyramid.

I'm sitting here trying to do the math....if I'd been using Anchor mounts, like you insisted I should have been doing, for years....how much money would of it cost me to change a hundred sets of mounts? Would I have been able to bill the customer for the price difference between the Anchors mounts and the "replacement" mount or would I "eat" that, also?
I certainly don't have enough money to "warranty" a bunch of mounts.
I don't understand how anyone could rationalize doing that.
I'll keep on using what the factory made that fits our cars....and keep on waiting for one to fail before it has 15 years on it.

Greg, you aren't rich because you are too generous with your time and knowledge and since you are generous you feel "bad" about charging people for your valuable time and knowledge.

I will be happy to try these as and when [or if] the solid mounts fail. I suspect with these things if they are going to fail they will do so shortly after initial installation ifthere is a quality issue. Perhaps I was fortunate with mine.
Did you ever manage to find out what the root cause of the problem was?

A bit off topic, but related to the motor mounts, how far should the belly of the engine be from the crossmember. I have searched with no luck.
Mine is an 85 auto and there is about .5-.75" clearance right now.
I know I will be doing the motor mounts eventually, just wondering how much if any mine have settled.
