Yeah, the kneejerk thought in the moment was clutch slip- a few miles before, I'd given it the spurs in 4th gear at about 4000 rpm, and it hesitated a bit. I'm always waiting for the day when the clutch will start slipping, so it was in the back of my mind. In retrospect, it was probably the fuse holder/fuse starting to let go, the pump couldn't keep up, and the car went lean. Later when it finally died, it lost power over a few seconds, and then cut out. Of course, when the engine cut out, it threw a spurious 'check oil level' warning on the digital dash, just to **** with my head.... Hece the comment about losing the engine. Then that impulse about getting to the shoulder in one piece without crashing took over....

If people liked the route, we can always recycle it, in a couple of years. Now that more of Angeles Crest is open, there are more options for combinations of old routes that maximize the time spent flinging oil and passengers sideways.....

I hope that I have a "timely" death. When my time comes.

Probably deserves a separate thread:

There a some serious concerns with the way some are putting fuses inside the battery well. Charging the battery in the enclosed space generates an explosive hydrogen and oxygen blend. Add a spark/arc from a melting fuse, and boom! The battery gets bigger, the well gets bigger, and the gas tank next door never feels a thing.

So how many have fitted the correct vent hose from the battery vent port to outside? (raises hand...). Bueller?

Onward: there are resettable and self-resetting thermal breakers designed for this kind of service. Choose one with screw terminals, or get one with spade prongs designed to fit into a standard ATO or ATC fuseholder. I like the heavy duty fuseholders so I can plug an ammeter in easily if needed.

The subject of dc distribution can get beaten like a rented dead horse to death. Still deserves some discussion by our experts (Allan) before there's a bigger problem than a car on the side of the road.

Related: sat through review of a recent accident where a tech was incinerated when a hydrogen-cooled generator wasn't sufficiently purged. A "Safety Light" was the ignition source for the guy guy carrying the wrong gas analyzer. Kind of sobering discussion.

Rob, Did not seem to be a knee jerk reaction from my vantage point, and thought you handled it quite well. dr bob, great idea, would like to see a new thread on venting the battery box, more info on thermal breakers, etc, and where to source the parts ? TIA. 77Tony

Rob, Following up on fusefolders:

I put that question to my friend in San Diego that does boat electrics and electronics professionally, and the only in-line ATC fuseholder that he will use is made by Weather-Pack. He uses the crimp type with the fancy tools, but West Marine sells the pre-assembled pigtail type, item# 11975869 for around $12.50-- might be cheaper elsewhere without the "marine" label. He said the rest were all crap and do exactly what yours did, burn and melt under significant load because of contact resistance.

Yes, that was outstanding! The whole route was good, thanks for putting that together!

We also took the back-road route to San Diego today, east on 60 to Banning and then south on 243 to Idyllwild which was a terrific stretch of road, then zig-zagged south via 74, 79 & 78 to Ramona, but it got a bit built-up and congested towards the south end of that.

There are some amazing roads near Ramona. One of the most exhilarating stretches of road I've ever driven is Mesa Grande Road, between Lake Henshaw and Santa Ysabel. It may have been the speed at which it was taken , but it was outstanding.

Palomar Mountain Road/Mesa Grande would be a great Sharktoberfest fun run as well, too bad it's in the wrong direction for most folks driving home afterwards.

I had a great time on the fun run. I understand there was some nice scenery. Didn't see any of it.

My plan to have the best HP/weight ratio worked like a charm (requiring only a bit of sanding on some fuse terminals the day before).

Paul wasn't much as a navigator, but worked well as ballast. Bit of a track derro - gave me some excellent driving tips along the way.
