Default 2nd to 3rd shift flare " Fixed so it seems for now "

Will it harm the transmission to continue driving with the flare in the shifting or should I park it until the K1 spring makes it in. All the other gears shift fine, 2nd to 3rd shifts fine unless the car is under a load while climbing in speed.

Why not just ease-off at the shift point so it doesn't slip during the next 3 or 4 days before your part arrives?

BTW, the kit did a good job with our 86. Cut down on the number of incidences of flare significantly.

+1 drive something else until your parts are in. Might not BE bad, but probably not a good idea, either.

I would drive it as little as possible. The fix can be quick, easy, and CHEAP!
Do a search for this: MB Valve Body Kit 126 270 44 77
I fixed the 2-3 flare on my GTS with this kit.
Darien Nunn just happened to be in town when I fixed mine.

Interesting.

Every transmission after somewhere in 1990 was supposed to have these pieces already installed.

I'm curious...could you see a difference in the parts?

Greg,
Yes I could. For one thing the spring was much longer. I attributed it at the time to the old spring being permanently compressed, but I'm not so sure now.

The K1 spring kit was the 1st thing I did on my 83 after research here and on the MB forums. Unfortunatly, that didn't fix mine, but that was why I got the car so cheap. I finally broke down back in the Spring and bought a rebuilt valve body from an outfit in Atlanta for $400. Bye bye flare!!

What's flaring exactly? The engine speeds up without the car gaining speed?

Yes, thanks Tom! I would also be interested to know what flaring is.

Flairing is, when under acceleration, the transmission shifts out of gear and the engine revs without the transmission shifting back into gear. On my car, it would not shift back into gear until I let off the petal at least a little bit.

My 89 TBF car had this problem after I dropped the new engine in and I was fearing the worst, but tightening the transmission cable completely fixed it. I know there are other causes, but make sure and tighten the cable first if you haven't already.

Put in the K1 spring kit from Roger today and did the task of filling the fluid back up. After a short test drive the transmission seems to shifting like new, the spring is much heavier than the one that was in the transmission. After the test drive the fluid was at the minimum mark on the view glass so I will add some more in the morning and give a longer drive. Not a hard job to do at all, would have been alot easier with a lift instead of the floor but thats all I have. Thanks, Jack
