Hook it up so the higher the volume on the stereo the quieter the muffler is.

Although it seems like a great idea considering all the trouble we have trying to get the right exhaust sound, I would be fearful as I just don't need ANOTHER thing to break

My 79 has had a "volume adjustable" muffler for about 20 years

The cavity is packed with fiberglass muffler material.
