I was in a air museum last month.

As well as one of the Concordes it had a full hanger dedicated to WWII planes with Spitfires, Hurricanes and Lancaster bombers.....alll powered by V12 Rolls Royce DOHC engines designed and engineered in the '30s......and we've came so far

Bent rod...I barely avoided that one morning when I came out and noticed I had left the gas petcock in the ON position all night on my 79 CBX with the bike on the sidestand, putting cylinder 1 rather low. I pulled the spark plug on cyl 1 and cranked the starter - a solid column of fuel shot across the garage.

I've contemplated using CBX heads to make a V12. The timing chain in the middle is just too awkward though.

Theres 2 chains in a CBX, One from the crank to the intake (IIRC) then other between the cams.

Later V4s in Honda mcycles used gears for more accurate timing.

The Merlin's and Griffins were SOHC engines, 4 valve engines.

True....SOHC 4 valve/cyl per 6 bank V12 engines......total 12 cyls, 2 cams and 48 valves.....just amazing technology for the era.

Which Era ??? given that ......"When DOHC technology was introduced in mainstream vehicles, it was common for it to be heavily advertised. While used at first in limited production and sports cars such as the 1925 Sunbeam 3 litre, Alfa Romeo is one of the twin cam's greatest proponents. 6C Sport, the first Alfa Romeo road car using a DOHC engine, was introduced in 1928. Ever since this, it has been a trademark of all Alfa Romeo engines.[3]

Fiat was one of the first car companies to use a belt-driven DOHC engines across their complete product line, in the mid-1960s.[citation needed], Jaguar's XK6 DOHC engine was displayed in the Jaguar XK120 at the London Motor Show in 1948 and used across the entire Jaguar range through the late 1940s, 1950 and 1960s. By the late 1970s, Toyota was the best seller of DOHC engines.[citation ........"

this stuff is really old ......like nearly 100 years old

You wouldn't be the first to think of doing that:

Jeff, you are both right and wrong.
The Merlin 27 Litre V12 was a Rolls Royce engine.
I was manufactured at Derby, Crewe and at
Rolls Royce aero engine division at Hillington in Glasgow.
With increased wartime demand they were also manufactured
by Ford UK and then by Packard in the US.
As well as being used in aircraft a detuned version
called the Meteor was used in tanks.
Hillington is local to me but the factory closed in 2004
with production moving to East Kilbride, about 10 miles away.

It would be fun to send him some 928s and see what 'happens'.

East Fortune, Scotland
They flew Concorde to Edinburgh, took the wings off and trucked it to the hanger then put it back together. I sat in seat 1 row 1 that was reserved for royalty.

If closer John Id have visited for sure.
