Default PORSCHETTE ON TRACK SOON!

Just spent an hour blogging about my track car updates, went to check a fact and deleted the whole damn thing. So, here are the highlights:

Brake failure crash at Turn 2-Infineon all fixed. Big Black fronts - Wilwood SL4s on rear. New BMW 25mm/25mm master installed (some noticeable improvement).

Head failure at Thunderhill creates 16 quarts of milkshake - New heads being CNC'd next week and will be on car in two weeks. Cam is giving up some HP in favor of more TQ with a wider band.

Tilton triple 5.5" clutch kit installed.

New HD aluminum driveshaft and poly couplers installed.

New C6Z06 Quaife diff installed with HD axles and hubs.

New EMCO sequential installed with new cradle to match. Flat shift not yet enabled. Bigger TQ should allow for lower RPM shifts and more frequent shifting. Less inclined to spin up motor when passing.

Cage modified to enable quicker exits.

Still weigh over 3K. Will start looking for more weight reduction when we're happy with drive train.

Still on RA-1s. Going to Hoosier 100s when we're happy with everything else.

If all goes well, will be at Infineon Sept 9-10 for testing with NASA.

Hope that answers most of the questions for those of you following our progress.

Why do you think higher torque will allow for lower RPM shifts? what RPM do you shift usually at?
This is still the devek beast motor, right? very nice!

why dont you race with us in the AMerican V8 supercar series. its very low key, not a huge groupe by any stretch and a lot safer, even if you were just testing , to run with us. plus, they give out near $5000 worth of stuff to the participants each race weekend. (SCCA group 3 AV8SS)

I want to see the car! Did i read that correctly? you have sequential gear box now??? wow!

Emco Sequential.....VERY NICE....makes me even more jealous :>)

BUT...I kinda have a sequential....granted a "lemons" sequential..but it does allow for "flat" upshifts!!! :>)

One more comment......RA1's are WORLDS slower than R6's & R100's are much better than R6's....once you go to the slicks you will NEVER go back....

BTW since I am on an insanely low budget...do you have any RA1 scrubs in 18" you don't want...my 18" rims arrived today!!! 18x8.5 and 18x10

tires wont be a big deal until that car is driven FLAT out when it is especially with that weight, R6s or A6s will be about 1.5 seconds a lap faster. Ill have a set ill donate to the program. bonnafied 4 heat cycle tires. (basicaly new). BUT, you have to run with us in the AV8SS

Brian, i have a ton of tires that would probably last a few weekends. (RA1s) can you use 275s and 305s?

I dont know if a 275 can fit on an 8.5" rim. i know it works on a 9" rim, as I ran those in the rears o the C2 rims, 9" wide set up.

275's or 305's will work on the 10" rims...but I need to source another set of 18x10's to run them all around....I found a set locally....just need to negogiate a proper "lemons" price

Just to be a stickler, RA1, R6, and even A6's are not "slicks" they are DOT radials.

Our Corvette's in NASA ST2 run A6's.

If we installed a true race slick, we would have to de-tune the engines by about 35-40 HP to stay in ST2.

At this point Larry's car is almost OFF TOPIC on a 928 tech forum ...... great effort however. I hope it meets all your expectations.

Anyone who thinks I'm not crying about the head failure doesn't know me very well. More $$$ for new heads and then more $$$ for the CNC work and then more $$$ for some additional machining for the rocker stands and then more $$$ for putting it back together and then more $$$ for dyno time. Better believe I'm crying.

As to the tires, pretty much agree with everyone. But, aren't A6s a little too soft for high speed tracks, compared to R6s?

As to the shifting, my TQ curve is within 10% of peak from about 3k to over 6k. My peak HP stays pretty flat to 6.5k. My old shift point was 6.6k, but I frequently found myself stretching to well over 7k, in order to avoid an additional up shift. We figure that rpms = heat and heat = increased rebuild intervals which = $$$. So, keeping the motor down to about 6.2k should save $$$. May not win races, but that has never been the real goal in the past.

The EMCO gear set was selected for 6.2k shift points and an absolute max of 6.6k. The motor can still go to 7.5k, but what's the point. I really don't have enough intake to make more power at higher rpms. I'm also running 6 gears and they would all be usable at the really big tracks. 6th isn't usable at TH since 5th can get to 160+ (and I'm already scared ****less that my brakes might fail going into T1).

So, while we could have a very extended discussion of HP vs TQ and the appropriate shift points, let's not. Until we get on track and can get some logging data back, I'm just guessing at what is the best set-up. Some of you may already know the answers, but I have to find out for myself.
