78-84 Imput Shaft Bearing

Default 78-84 Imput Shaft Bearing

Ok,
Im about to write the big check ($656.00) for a new imput shaft bearing. Is their another option or cross referenced piece available ? The stock part number is (928 302 152 06)

I went through this once. This would be a standard bearing if not for the shoulder. A bearing supplier said they could add a snap ring groove to a standard bearing but I never did that. There are no equal shouldered bearings.

I've got three to replace if that could be done inexpensively.

Thats a great option. I will pull it this weekend to get the dimensions and call a local bearing house that has done custom work for me before.

We've looked pretty hard at this. We've tried to come up with a tooling fixture that will allow people to modify the tranmission case to use the later bearing.....which is really cheap. We were trying to make a fixture that would do this, at home...much like our water pump repair fixture.

Still working on it....

Any good machinist could individually set-up the cases and machine them for the later bearing....it is pretty straight forward, aside from the issue with the length of the transmission case. Are there mills with "increased" table dimensions (like a bigger lathe would have?)

Your other option is to buy a later transmission case and swap all the pieces over...but that is a lot of work, setting everything up.

Since the bearing is $656...it does make the decision to "upgrade" to the later trans much more cost effective!!

A CNC machining center would have to be huge to allow the case to stand up.
It would be a matter of hanging the case off the side of a Bridgeport knee mill. I do this kind of thing all the time to machine the end of tall parts.
I like that idea better than grooving a bearing.

we have a bunch of transmissions laying around 79, 82, etc. will any parts work for you ??

If you want to do the tooling, I can send you samples of cases and bearings. My mill isn't accurate enough....wait....the mill might be accurate enough....I'm probably the problem....

Make sure you want to be the "transmission case machining center"? Could be a curse, when you've got other things going on....

It's a single "bore" operation. The step stays the same, as I recall.

No, that's not enough money to justify that switch....but you could probably find "later" bare transmssion cases sitting around....for awhile.

With his electric motor I think he only has two gears......all he needs with the instant torque !

Thanks for the offer. I will definatly be contacting you if I go this route.
I think I will contact the gentleman who suggested modifying the case.

Great news, I am a journyman machinist ! This definatly sounds like the way to go.

I went down this route as well; The dealer mentioned the later version input shaft bearing wouldn't fit. 'Well, with that difference, I will MAKE it fit!' Was my reply. Spending 29 euros, I had the later version bearing and for 50 Euros, my transmission housing was milled in order to make the new bearing fit. I've had no problems at all with this setup, So my advice is this route:-)

I could certainly do this for you. Just send the case to be modified and some way of determining the desired bore size.
