Default 88S4, power window problem...

Question, my drivers side window no longer works. I checked the fuse (though not necessary since its one 30amp fuse for driver and passenger) and the passenger side works.

I press the button an hear nothing, what are the chances in your experience of it being the switch or the power window motor...?

I tried testing for current on the switch on the red/black cables but got very little current reading on the driverside button, but the passenger side showed current.

If the power window motor goes back does it just die, or would it still sound like its trying...? At the moment I dont hear anything.

thanks...

Thanks MrMerlin, I believe you are talking about "console covers" as being the center console (a stupid question probably)...follow from the window switch back to the heater outlet and swap with the right side and see if it works...

Sorry just verifying your comment had nothing to do with the doors themselves...now that I think about it, it should not... : ) I think I figured out what you meant all by myself...!

It's likely that you'll need to remove the door panel and plastic barrier to access the window motor. My 88 gave up after 23 years recently also (and it was raining ). Hope it's just an electrical but the R&R of the motor isn't too bad. A few 10mm bolts hold it in place and once removed, there are some good threads here on how to access and clean the innards. Buy yourself a $2 brass brush at the hardware store to clean up corrosion that's likely causing the inop.

Sometimes you can gently bang on the door to get some action out of the motor - tap just aft of the vanity light on the door.

My window problems were:

Only worked on warm days (over 70d)...and then only off and on.

Ended up being corroded terminals from the harness to the motor itself.

If it was getting harder and harder to get it to respond to the switch, then the chances of it being the switch are good. If it just quit, it's less likely to be the switch, but, as Stan pointed out, it's easy to test.

On mine, the problem was a broken wire on the door, an little ways after the harness comes out of its protective sheathing. This appears to be a point where the motor power wire gets bent back and forth quite a bit and will eventually break. Access to this requires removal of the armrest and door panel.

I had a broken wire in the door. The insulation was perfect, wire broken inside. Found it by working my fingers until I found a flexible spot in the wire, more flexible than the rest of the wire. Cut out the bad spot, spliced in fresh material, good to go.

really quick guys...when i removed the console sides to get access to the window switch connectors I noticed the passenger side is connector from the car and switch side is GREEN while the driver side is RED, I tested the working passenger side to the driver side and no go.

I wonder if I accidentially connected to the sunroof...? is it normal for the connector colors to be different colors from the driver side to the passenger side...?

Also anyone have any good links as to how to gain access to the door motor so I can test it with a battery chager to see if it comes alive, if it does than I can check for loose or broken connections in the door...

thanks...

Thanks Kelnal, before I do that I think I make pull apart the console again and re-verify that I was really connecting the Driver window connector. I was hoping someone here with an S4 knew whether the colors are different from side to side... green on the passenger and red on the driver...

I am a big guy and dont fit very well under the dash : )

This site says red left and green right...I still hope someone who knows would agree or disagree before I take it apart again to re-test...

Red = Left Window
Yellow = Sunroof
Green = Right Window
