Default Ghostly Parking Lights? - On without being switched on...

Hi Everyone,

I had something strange happen today.

Drove my 1988 S4 on some errands, stopped to buy a paper and then drove to check the mailbox. When I got the UPS Store and turned to car off, the dinger went off when I opened the drivers door. But it was daytime and I didnt turn on the parking/headlights.

With the car off, key removed, I got out and the parking lights were on even though the light switch was off. Dinger still going anytime I opened the door.

Got my mail and headed home, the whole way figuring that I would have to pull the fuse to turn the parking lights off for now, and have to check the relay for the parking lights.

I get home, pull into the garage and turn the car off. No dinger when I opened the door and the parking lights were out.

What gives.... do I have a ghost living in my 928?

Joe

Actually I think you've discovered the parking light function. If you park the car with the turn signal activated it will illuiminate the lights on that side.

Both right and left or just one side? What happens when you leave the signal stalk down (or up)?

It weird, because I never do it, but I did use my turn signal to turn left into the parking spot. (I had a car right behind me.)

When I got out of the car, the parking lights were on, IE both front and both back parking lights on, plus the side lights on the driver's side.

I didn't check the parking lights on the passenger side of the car.

you probably had the TS stalk in the turn position if you do this it will illuminate the side markers and the front and rear parking lights for that side ,
Also the dinger will go off telling you you have left the TS stalk in the turn position

So what you are saying is, that if I have my turn signal on and turn the car off, my parking lights will go on and stay on?

This is a new one for me.

Yeap.... most German cars will do that. turn signal on left lights up left side. right, right side. Very handy when you parallel park on a dark street at night.

No worries Joe, first few times it happened to me I was convinced I had faulty wiring. At least you were smart enough to ask after the first time you noticed it. I lived in misery for awhile fearing I was going to have a few very long days with a voltmeter. lol.
