Default 928 Key light

Searched and saw several threads about LED conversion, but none about just getting standard set-up to work. Sorry if I missed it. I have a new battery and bulb from Roger. Battery tests OK. But bulb still doesn't come on. I tried the battery directly against the bulb and directly against the copper piece, still nothing. The pic is the best focus my camera would take, sorry about that. Is there anything missing (other than my understanding of how this works)?

Thanks,
Doug

If you have a new bulb and battery and it still doesn't light, you need to clean all the electrical contacts carefully and thoroughly. Looking closer at the pics, it seems you may also be missing a contact piece, the one that makes contact with the base of the bulb.

Thanks, Dan. I'll PM Roger to see if he has the missing part.

Dan is right you are missing the rear contact.

Thanks, Roger. Do you have that piece? If not, is there anything special about it or is it something I can manufacture?

It is just a thin piece of copper that connects the base of the bulb to the side of the battery. I don't see why you couldn't bend up something to fit in there.

I have a newer style key. I just replaced the head which came with a working light and battery and is a lot less battered. The blade just clicks in. Here's what the disassembled inside looks like alongside the new one:

Neat! I wasn't aware of that option. From which supplier did you get it?

Doug,
The lighted key head above is for the later style.
Either make a piece to fit your key or have a new style blank made by www.keys4classics.com.

Doug,

You should be able to just buy a new key head and put it on your 79 key.
They are about $15 bucks. BUT, I will bet you a buck that in a few months, your light/battery will barely work. I went through several until I upgraded to the LED. Sounds like you don't want to, but just in case you do:

I posted this a while back:

I got sick of the nasty key that lost its crest a while back and never did light up like it was supposed to.

So, I treated GTS to a new key head and key chain.

Also, did the LED upgrade to the key head based on a couple of good links I found via Rennlist.

Key Head
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...lt_keyhead.htm

LED upgrade to Key Head
http://p-car.com/diy/key/
(scroll down to second article)

The key head is about $15 from the Porsche store.

The batteries are about $10 from batteries plus

The LED is about $5 from Radio shack.

Takes about 20min for the whole thing.

I ended up doing 2 keys and it’s WAAAAY brighter than the original key head. (If yours even works)

If nothing else, the first link should give you a little help w the new key head.
Good luck!!

Hi Chuck,

It wasn't my original intention, but now I'm searching for an appropriate piece of copper and I'll be manufacturing anyway. I'll probably get it working old school since I have the new bulb and battery, but, if it doesn't last long as you suggest, I'll likely try to upgrade it to LED at that time. It certainly looks very nice in your pics. Would the LED upgrade work on the existing 79 key head? I see you used two watch batteries. I assume the existing Varta one isn't enough?? Do you think the two watch batteries would fit in the existing head, or does one need the new head?

Thanks,

Doug
