How long ago did you order key heads at $15 each?????????????
First you need a key that will fit the later key head.

They are about $15 bucks. BUT, I will bet you a buck that in a few months, your light/battery will barely work. I went through several until I upgraded to the LED. Sounds like you don't want to, but just in case you do:
Must be hit and miss. I got my two old keys (one lighted, one non) and one "new" key (90s) with my car. The bulb in the new keyhead was burnt out when I got it. From the appearance of the bulb and battery in the old lighted head, they may very well have been original. After a slight cleaning though, it worked nicely with a new battery.

I'd betcha that LED is a heck of a lot brighter though.

Roger,

The key heads for my 79 key and the GTS key are identical. They both look like the one in the pic that I posted. The only difference is that one has a colored crest and one has a silver crest.
I doubt there were different size "keys" made??? The only difference in the 79 and the 94 keys were the length. (at least on mine) One for non-alarm cars (shorter), one for the alarm cars (longer)
Correct??

For the GTS, the car came with 2 keys that had a standard size key head, (the smaller one with a crest and a light) and another key that had a big *** red key head on it. My guess is that you could pry it off the key and put a standard key head on it if you wanted to.

Chuck,
The heads on the earlier cars are definitely different to the later style heads - see pictures post #1 & #6 - maybe I am missing something here.
The earlier key is an integral part of the key head and not removable as in the later style - just tried prying one apart - no worky.

Default Second key

Since my main key was apart, I went for one of the valet keys and was surprised to find I have the other original light key; had totally forgotten about it. The old battery had leaked and corroded everything, but I just cleaned it up and it came out pretty good. I'll manufacture a new brass piece based on the template I now have so that my other key will be complete as well. Success! Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions and input.

Doug

I posted this a while back:

I got sick of the nasty key that lost its crest a while back and never did light up like it was supposed to.

So, I treated GTS to a new key head and key chain.

Also, did the LED upgrade to the key head based on a couple of good links I found via Rennlist.

Key Head
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...lt_keyhead.htm

LED upgrade to Key Head
http://p-car.com/diy/key/
(scroll down to second article)

The key head is about $15 from the Porsche store.

The batteries are about $10 from batteries plus

The LED is about $5 from Radio shack.

Takes about 20min for the whole thing.

I ended up doing 2 keys and it’s WAAAAY brighter than the original key head. (If yours even works)

If nothing else, the first link should give you a little help w the new key head.
Good luck!!
Chuck,

Neither on of these links would open for me, but I am VERY interested in the upgrade to LED for the keys to my 86.5. Do you have to use both of the batteries for the new LED to work, or did you have two batteries because you were doing two keys??

If you have the procedure written down somewhere I would love to have the steps to upgrade mine. Mine both work (on occasion), but on their best day they are pretty dim.

Thanks, Paul

Try these links

Replacing key head
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarti...lt_keyhead.htm

LED upgrade that I used
http://p-car.com/diy/key/

Those links should work.

As far as 2 batteries is concerned, I did not try without the 2, so i'm not sure. I just put one on top of the other as the link suggested.

Key Heads with light and battery are $25.50 each. Does not fit the early keys.

Ok,
Maybe I'm just not getting this one.

Here's a pic I just took w my phone sitting here at the computer.

The keys on the left: The red one is the Valet Key and the one attached to it is the backup key.
Both of these are for the GTS.

The center Key is the main key I use on the GTS with the new key head and LED conversion.

The Key on the right: Its the Key for the 79. I put a new key head on the key a few years ago. it is the same exact head (silver crest instead of colored crest) as the GTS center key has.

So. The only conclusion I can draw is that there were valet keys made for all years?? These Red key heads probably had to be destroyed to get the actual key out of them if that is in fact possible???
And the main keys had to have been the same dimensions (Not necessarily the length) from early all the way to late model??

Chuck,
The later key blank (I do not know when the change over was made) has a special end that allows it to be locked in place in the lighted key head. So removable and the head is replacable.
All my early 78 & 79 keys are solid in that they cannot be removed from the lighted key head. They are all more square like the red valet keys but black and have the press button light.
They seem to be molded into the key head and no matter how I try to pry it out it will not budge.
Very easy to have the key form recut onto the later style blank and then you can fit a lighted key head.
Maybe that is what happened with your 79.

Rog,

As I said, what am I missing and You are probably right. I can't remember back that far. That makes total sense to me and who am I to argue with Greatness??!!

I remember sending a key to 928 INTL so they could key a new ignition cylinder to my Key, but not sure if they sent me a "New" key blank or not. That could explain it. Regardless, this was all done when I did EVERYTHING, while I had the pod out. Ignition cylinder, ingnition switch, LEDs, new coller bushing and bearing, yada yada yada. So it's a little hazy and long ago. Probably 2005 or 2006.

I'm going with you on this!

Thanks for the info Chuck Schreiber!

Worked like a charm. Radio Shack parts are now 19 and change.

Bought the key head last year and never really worked at all.
