Default Poll: should a PPI include a check for Crankshaft End Play?

I was having a short discussion with a well known 928 person who can chime in if they want.

Any way, he said that checking the end play was not something that a normal PPI would cover and that it was as normal for a GTS to have thrust bearing failure as it is for a GTS to use oil.

We are talking about a car with less than 50,000 miles on it that had excessive end play, .005 over the wear limit .

I actually was stunned that this person would say that.

I am pretty sure what the poll will indicate, but i wanted to make sure, so vote if you would. (if I can figure out how to do a poll)

As would I, if the end play is excessive and out of spec there is no reason to go any farther IMHO.

Sorry, but that's crazy. The main purpose of a PPI is to judge the mechanical state of the car. Omitting such an important area is just negligent.

Or is the person saying that there is no point in checking, because pretty much every GTS has TBF? So every GTS sale should have an engine rebuild factored into the purchase price?

With known failure modes that have materialized, you as a shop owner have an obligation to your craft to do the right thing when generating opinion on a car's condition, meaning adding this to the PPI.

I watched a PCA member try to unload a boxster at a PCA breakfast Saturday.

He didn't know that I knew --- he had a shop button it up with a scorched DME and snip the check engine light. Ethics

I think he meant that it is a normal thing.

This is a near exact quote.

"this type of issue is simular to the 928 GTS's all using oil, things just happen with use on these older cars with miles and usage..There is nothing a normal PPI would of ever done that would of found this that I'm aware of !!"

I assume we are discussing S4 auto boxes , manuals should be good , as well as early cars up to 84 .

I also do not think this person is doing anything that he thinks is not ethical, I would bet every dollar I have in my pockets right now that he would never sell a car that he knew that had issues like that.

I think they all should be checked, many of the early cars have issues when they have had the TT taken out and installed wrong.

But mainly on the 4 valve cars.

Sure....just like all double disc clutch cars have grinding synchros because the transmissions are junk.....

Might as well not bother inspecting any possible leaks, since well know every 928 leaks something.

The radiators are crap, might as well ignore an overheating 928 during the PPI since that is also normal.

Mileage is irrelevant since most have broken speedo gears.

Bald tires? Who cares, I mean we all know every shop does the alignments wrong so why bother caring about that?

High idle? So what.....it's asinine to expect any 928 to have all vacuum lines and seals in good shape. So might as well skip that too.

Test compression? What a waste of time that is.

I'm glad you started this thread Greg. I'm seeing what a waste of mioney a PPI is. My next car purchase just got a bit cheaper.

Thanks Greg!!!!

I vote yes simply because of the remediation costs if found. It basically renders the car worthless(or parts).

All autos should be checked. Regardless of year.

Though it is very obvious when one opens an early car as to if it is needed.

As of yet, I have never heard, or seen a manual car that is out of spec.

But isn't that the whole point of a PPI? To find those issues and document them? This reasoning does not make logical sense. The last part makes me think he doesn't know how to check, in which case is not qualified to do a PPI on a 928 IMO.

You must tell a shop WHAT to inspect and determine how much such an inspection will cost. Ask for a PPI and most shops tend to be pretty casual about putting it in the air and LOOKING for obvious issues. So the key is defining what YOU want checked and be willing to pay for it.

When a person is in good health and goes for a general checkup to a doctor, do they need to tell the doctor where to look for potential issues? The patient is paying the doctor for a thorough examination to find any and all problems using their extensive expertise in the field.

I can see it now, "So you're 75 years old? Well, there's no point in checking for cancer, most people this age or older have it somewhere anyway."

I have to disagree with that Jim, what a lay person is looking for in a PPI is some kind of reasonable hope that they are getting a good car, and IMHO known issues like TBF absolutely should be included in a PPI, or you are just looking at the car, not inspecting it for problems.

Most first time buyers of a 928 would not know what to look for, that is one reason why a PPI is so important.
