Hi Tom, here's my story. In the threads there are also some links to Dwayne's posts which were of great help to me. In my last post in the thread i started is my summary of the analysis and solution for my non woRking speedo.
Maybe it's not all relevant to your issue. But it may feel good to know that other 928 owners spend too much time with their heads in the spare tire well as well.

Have fun and i hope you fix it. Perseverence and searching the forum did the job in my case.
Leo.

If I am not mistaken the Police will tell you how fast you are going.

The first thig I would do, Tom, is see where the gray wires go. It sounds to me like they have been put in there to add something to the car that it did not have before.

I interpret your original post to say that there is a brown wire and a black wire, rather that a brown and black wire, because then you say they are spliced, which suggests one brown and one black.

Brown in the porsche is always ground, I think.

I can't say about the black, but is suspect it is power. Therefore I also suspect that someone add something in by splicing both power and ground. That seems pretty simple.

Can you find where the brown wire and the black wires were originally cut? If so why don't you take the gray wires out of the circuit and reconnect the brown wires and the black wires. That is how I would proceed. Then see what in the car is not working, such as a radar detector or some other added accessory, if anything. It might just be a toggle switch like someone else suggests that would defeat the odometer for fraud purposes. However, I don't know why one would need to cut the ground wire to do that.

Trace the new wires.

Jerry Feather.

P.S. I was kidding too about the reference to my first name. I am not too sensitive about Jerry, but I was kind of surprised to learn all that about the Germans. I guess the Porsche 928 is "Jerry Built." Of course that is also diluted by the fact that most or all of the workers in the Porsche factory are from Yugoslavia or someplace like that.

Been there, done that last Friday. 85 mph in a 70 mph. They got 4 of us with a cop car on the overpass, and 3 other cop cars waiting on the other side of the overpass. Next purchase-radar detector!

I am kind of embarrassed that I was not going faster, but I was only reading the tach at 3000 rpms.

Jerry, thanks for the help. I did reattach the brown and black wires where they were cut to no avail, but I will check the fuses next as they have to power something.

The grey wires with the red stripe come out of a grommet on the back wall of the compartment like they were meant to be there. I will investigate it further.

Thanks again guys!
