How about an adapter to correct the speedometer reading for non-stock size tires?

I'll add it to the list of stuff to think about.

OK, folks. First batch is sold out. I'll start another batch ASAP. I've disabled new orders for the time being.

Cool that it sold out.

I want (need?) one, but I'm not quite ready to use it so decided to not order one yet.

I'm definitely in for one of the next batch - I'll be pulling the dash out of my 89 in the next couple of months so then would be a good time to do the install of the various LED's to go with the dimmer.

I hope to be able to start production on the next batch of ten next week. I'll PM each of you with the ordering info.

I didn't do a good job of managing the list of all the people who contacted me (via forum posts, PMs, e-mails, etc.) over the last year or so expressing interest, so I wasn't in a good position to try to be fair about filling orders based on that. I apologize for anyone who has been inconvenienced by the delays. I'll do my best to get as many of these knocked out over the next few weeks as I can.

Test install on mine using the LED's from Nicole. Tomorrow will be testing on a set up we've got going on here that is a bit better quality.

I just talked to Sean for awhile and he reported that on his '88 (IIRC) the dimmer module (or perhaps something else? Sean thought it was the module itself) was emitting a slightly annoying noise (buzzy sound; I heard it over the phone and you can hear it a little in the video he posted if you crank the volume up) during the period when it was fading to a new setting. This is very strange and I'd like to hear ASAP any results from others when you install them. I've never heard any noises from these modules during testing with incandescent bulbs, LED bulbs of various sorts, and the resistor pack I use for load testing. Perhaps there is something unique in Sean's car that's causing some sort of feedback or something. I'll be very interested to see if this problem occurs on any other cars.

I'm going to be down in Sean's area this weekend, so I might get to hear it first hand.

Thanks for posting the video, Sean.

I'll continue working with you (and anyone else) to make sure these modules work as well as possible.

Question

A few questions I should have asked you when I was talking to you, Sean:
  1. Does that buzzing really only happen while the illumination level is being adjusted (or it's fading to the new setting), or is it any time that it's not either at 0% or 100%? The latter case would be way worse.
  2. How was the 50 cm wire length on the connection kit? Too long? Too short? Just right?
  3. Any other comments on installation? (I have no idea how hard it is to get to the rheostat connections and ground point near the instrument cluster on pre-'90 cars).

Ed, like I said on the phone, to me this is a non issue. I originally called about the wiring but that was easy to figure out. . I have another '88 to install one into and that should be easy and smooth.

If I see ya this weekend it will be for beers and cheers as this is a fantastic option for those of us who have gone to LED lights in the car.

Oops, just saw this.

I installed the other one in an '88 a few minutes ago and there was no buzzing sound, also when I swapped the other box in to my car the buzzing continued so it is something in my car that is causing it. It's when I turn the lights on, key off (so no stereo) and happens when I get to a certain spot on the rheostat, I'm getting a new one for another car and will test it on mine first and see if that is the cause.

I cut off about 6" of wiring for my installs and I'd say keep that length just in case others want to locate the box elsewhere.

On the other car it works just as it should. Very well done Ed, it's easy and quick to install.

I just installed Ed’s LED dimmer today and thought I’d share how I did it. A GREAT product! First class design and materials. Functions perfectly—all backlight and pod lights; to include the HVAC controller dim with this unit. All wires are the correct color too--no drama.

It took me just a little over an hour to install it. Some of the seasoned pro’s could do it much faster I’m sure. Probably would be much easier to install on the older models too as I remember having easier access to the rheostat on my 84.

I don’t know when Porsche started installing the knee protector/cover, but if your car has it, I recommend installing the dimmer at the same time you install the LEDs. You’ll have to remove the knee cover anyway--and once you remove the knee cover, you’re half way to removing the pod.

In the end, it's only 5 wires. I forgot to include how I connected the grounding wire, but it's simply a wire that Ed already has a ring crimped to--you just remove the MP-IV grounding bolt and add it to the gazillion other grounds there. You can see the ring on the brown wire below.

Again, great product Ed--thank you!!
