Default 1985 Porsche 928 sold for $2000

I was at an auto auction over the weekend. Saw this 928 go through it ran, needed a few things replaced in the interior, dash and pod were cracked. Front spoiler had been hit. I am pretty sure the car had been repainted or at the very least the left fender and hood had been taken off at some point.

So I noticed the above and we went on our way looking at all the other cars at the auction.

When its finally time for this car to go through the driver who runs the car through the auction sets off the alarm so the owner, an older gentleman, comes over gets it started and then gets out, I am able to talk to him about the car, he tells me he has owned it since 2002. I'm thinking wonderful, when was the last time you had the timing belt changed or the car serviced? He tells me he doesn't know, I ask if it has ever been repainted before and he tells me the whole car has been repainted years ago due to small dents.

I ultimately passed on the car as I know first hand how much you can spend before it is a reliable car. I just wanted to share this with everyone so they can get an actual idea of where prices are at.

A public car auction is not a good representation of the market.

what was once a luxury/performance/super car - sad thing about them that get neglected. but on the other side we can pick them up for cheap and fix them up!

Your absolutely right. Just wanted to show people that those "craigslist deals" aren't really that great if they look hard enough.

Those Craigslist deals can sometimes be a rip off. There is one ad out on Craiglist here in San Antonio to where the guy is reselling a Rennlister car for double the purchase price. So buyers beware.

This car was picked up at auction for $3200 and sold for $3900. 1987 S4 auto with 140 some K miles, 2 owner, no records, mediocre respray with rear bumper cover and fender repair/fill, start right up and ran strong, shifted perfectly, leather was pretty decent, especially rear quarters, pass window didn't work (not the switch either), no tools, spare or compressor, all foam under average carpet, headlight bucket missing screw causing binding/inop headlights rotation without assistance.

I could of had it for $3800, but decided to pass because of paint and possible flecks in the oil. If I could have performed a crank end play and it was within spec, I'd probably bought it just to flip. When another buyer showed up while we were there, thought it was nice to let go to another 928 enthusiast.
