HVAC and Center Flap actuator repair
Got the car back couple weeks ago after MM and OPG RR and had AC charged, system was converted to 134A couple years ago but wasn't cooling well. AC compressor not engaging, found out HVAC relay dead. Bought $5.99 Radio Shack relay and used DR Bob's and Dwayne's HVAC RR write up (thanks a million, saved much time) and got compressor running again.
Now found Center Flap actuator started making noise banging in dash. Center Actuator doesn't hold vacuun. Pulled center console apart, still need to remove complete console , called Roger and have diaphrams on the way. Will probably change out the foot well actuator diaphram as long as I'm in there.
Looking to get it all back together Friday cause on vacation next week and heading up to Owls Head Museum for car show, great ride up the Maine coast.

Bob.
Have you tested all your actuator circuits? Do you know for sure you need to do your footwell?
FWIW, if only the center comb is bad, alot of people tie it open, and plug the vacuum line. Save it until you have more reason to go in there... like a failed footwell flap.

Jim, too late, already in there. I will probably only change the Combo actuator diaphram, wanted to get it apart tonight, have to go to Florida for business and get back Thursday night, so I want to button it all back up Friday. Should have parts from Roger Friday.
Wasn't too bad following "Sir" Dwayne's tutorial.

your going to have to remove the glovebox to fit the center pod actuator, then remove the air duct hose to see the end of the actuator a long 1/4 in extension and a 5/16 socket works to push the arm back on.
Note the connector for the glove box light is just above the rear of the computers disconnect it before removing the glovebox (red and brown wires 2 wire connector)

I've been trying to figure out what the actuator on the upper right
does.
It was not connected either mechanically or vacuum wise.
I've got my dash completely out while I was having
the car refurbished.
The mechanical work is done -- now its time to get back
in and address the HVAC and a few other things.
The wires maybe a red herring -- I think they might have been
connected to some Cellphone brick back in the day.
thanks,
Mike

So where can I find the vacuum actuator replacement -- or rebuild kit?
Anyone have a picture of where the mechanical connection is supposed to
connect to?
My center console one -- the big dual one -- also has an issue that I can
get it to pull in, but it will not self retract?
Is that a rubber issue or spring problem?
Has anyone just replaced these with solenoids?
thanks,
Mike

The comb flap is a bypass flap for when the water valve is closed and you are in max cooling mode - or close to it - usually this is with the AC on but it actually doesn't have to be - if the cabin is above abient it can also be when the temp slider is near the left end.
The comb flap when activated bypasses air direct from the AC evaporator to the console vents and door vents - when closed the air also cirulates aroiund the heater core (some passing through it depending on the temp mixing flaps.
For max AC this gives you a little more flow and a more direct path - certainly helps to bypass an already hot heater core - if the heater is cold and stays cold (valve closed) it doesn't actually make much difference to air temperature.

John Pirtles writeup is a good starting point. LINK
Dwaynes writeup is excellent when you get in deep. LINK
Read these two, and let me know if you have further questions.
