Default NO DIFFERENCE IN OCTANE FILLUP!

Hello,.
The previous owner of the vehicle was Religious about filling up on --PREMIUM fuel.
Well my other vehicle of 14 years never complained of regular , except one day. A bit of detonation. HOt hot hot.

I've been putting in regular gas and I tell you..I have felt zero difference in any performance or complaints from the engine.
It, the heat has gone up here to 28 deg. celsius. I have heard zero detonation.
It was very warm today and I know that from atmospheric density these cars can sometimes be a bit picky.
I love the manual but I can still and so love the kickdown from an Auto that's in tune.

You do not have to hear detonation for it to be there, it just has to be really, really bad for you to hear it.

so what is the recommendation on octane rating to use? i thought the manual suggests 90. so you could go with 89 without drama right?

Bill Ball uses regular -yes !....?
I hope I'm not wrong here.
What's good for him is good for me.

I did not officially go with that logic- I just remembered this -NOW-! As a logical reason to use regular. And of course my 14 years of porsche experience.

Why not check the knock counts and see?
That way you will know.

I am wanting an educaction.-seriously.
I don't wish to abuse the engine in any way.

But, but, but.....a little knock is ok. That is why these cars have knock sensors...

Hey Mike, if you ever sell the 928 please include a link to this thread in the ad.

I've seen stock 928's in perfect working order knock with high octane (per the data logs in the shark tuner).
That's all I need to know.

Most people cannot tell the difference between a full second or more in acceleration over a 1/4 mile. This isn't about performance, it's about slowly destroying the engine or some of it's parts (like the head gaskets or rod bearings).

Same reasoning leads to people spending $100 on some widget they see at 2AM on TV, then claiming their gas mileage went up and their acceleration improved.

And I just thought you were not talking goofy, just unknowing about knock.

Eric is right, and so am I, how do you know if you have as you say ZERO knock, simple answer is you do not.

Do you really think that because you can not hear it that it is not beating your bearings out?

Cant tell you Mike.....never use it but my car has great compression, runs well and the intake has been refreshed so idles as it should; cold, warm or hot.

IMHO its the one cost of ownership.

You only get higher performance if your engine build requires it FOR performance.

Unlike MOST engines...where its about longevity.

Every knock event is a little hammer to your soft soft soft bearing material.

Yes..the ones you cant hear, will never hear..do that.

Mine says use 98 and it is tolerant of Cali 91, and it is happiest w/ the race gas from the speed shop.

87 and 89 are not usable w/out a bottle or two of octane boost.
