Hey all,
The bearings in my smog pump are bad, have the heads / exhaust out right now, and am fabbing an exhaust with no cats. I'd like to delete the smog pump (de-federalize) and remove the plumbing but keep it Porsche original looking as this is a special car.
Don't know if all the euro idler pulleys for the smog pump/radiator fan are the same - but I would be trying to fit it to a MT 79' euro with the 4.5L CIS.
Does anyone have pictures of a Euro CIS engine bay from 78 or 79? That would be a big help as to what the motor should have looked like on a ROW vehicle.
I've got some H4 headlights to put on this gal too!!!

usually with a smog pump delete you just put on either a 20 or 21 inch belt from the crank to the fan,
get both belts and take back the one thats not tight enough.
IIRC the idler pulley you speak of is very hard to find and its very expensive if you can find a new one

The air pump bearings are pretty easy to replace. I got bearings for mine at the local NAPA. I also left the guts out of the pump when I had it apart. Much cheaper than trying to find the pully assembly.

Thanks guys!! Great info- so I've got a few options here:
1.)Gut the air pump, rebuilt the bearings and continue to use it at just a tensioner
2.)Use a direct belt (with no tensioner) from crank to fan pulley (20")
What about a third option...could I space the fan pulley foward somehow and run it on the power-steering pump belt circuit?
I will look around for some 80 US cars at salvage yards!!

4) electric fan - if you don't have (working) A/C, then the stock pusher fan often works fine
Most(?) ROW engines also had an air pump for air injection into the exhaust ports (to reduce HC).

And I removed all the plumbing for the air injection. The heads are the same on both ends so the plugs and seal rings used on the fronts work for the holes on the rears that'll be left. The plugs and rings are available. I tried to rig up some plugs and that wasn't worth the time invested.
The short belt is good, too. I think the V belts are available in 1/2" increments.

I've got an 80 Euro 4.5 that I did the air pump delete on. The whole job stalled until I found the plugs for the rear of the heads. If you're having trouble finding them, get them from the cam tower of a 944. They're used on several models including 911's.
Just use a short belt (20/21 inch) for the fan. These are not automotive belts, they're lawnmower belts and stretch pretty easily.
