I took a look at this today before the auction ended at 15.5K

My observations,
service records for brakes, fan, alt, belt replacement, rear window.
no records for TB/WP
A/C blowing semi cold air
cooling fans not working
rear ac flaps broken
interior very good condition, slight wear drivers bolster
wheels severe curb rash on 2 rear
body good shape, a few dings in front.
Drivers door gasket needed replacement
passenger side mirror scuffed paint
engine sounded very smooth and quiet.
oil very clean, just changed.
Did not get to drive it, seller weary of TB/WP failure ( can't blame him its probably never been replaced ) .

Default OK time for your guys to pile on my decision to buy this one

I was actually down the list on bids for this one but a few "bidders" who were bogus didn't respond with a deposit so I made an offer.

Like a lot of post in regards to this one I'm assuming I'll need to minimally put 3-5k into it to give it the attention that it has probably not had for awhile. I was looking for one with "good bones" to bring back or in this case maintain.

I'm new to Rennlist but not to Porsches. I've currently have a '04 996 C4S Cab, had a '01 C4 and a 87 944 but never a 928. Would appreciate any of what is obviously a good group of well informed 928 guys gently breaking me into the "unique" joys of this car.

I don't have unlimited funds and actually stretched a bit for this one although I'm also not crazy about white cars in general. I did find the original owner and had a conversation which pushed me to grab this one. Helps to have family members in jobs that pays them to be able find people for a living.

Car was maintained well but sporadically by highly educated and wealthy owner who traveled a lot and drove it while in Cambridge mainly in the Summers. Climate controlled garage it's entire life which is why the interior is in such great shape.

Scrapes and dings from wife who was "forced" to drive the car when he was using their Mercedes whom he swears is the worst parallel parker in the history of driving. All around Cambridge requires this skill set. She used the wheels as curb feelers it appears.

Go ahead and pile on but for barely above 14k I think, for now, I have a decent car that even if I don't get it all back after getting it right the enjoyment factor will be decent compensation for the 2-3 k I may have over paid after getting her back in fighting shape.

I may also have to revert back to eating tuna and palindrome pasta after breaking my 17k budget to get me a decent 928.

I didn't get it to be a garage queen or for even local PCA stuff. I'm currently at the Porsche Parade in Savannah and bounced this off a few of the 928 coin ours guys who said its an decent deal.

OK start the beatings.........

Welcome and good luck.

Lots of information on the site and links to others.

Change the fuel lines ASAP, Roger at 928srus has a kit and well worth it. Also get the Jim Moorehouse CD with the manuals and other items on it, well worth it.

Many write ups on WP, belt, tension rebuild (I would go with the Porken tensioner instead) and other maintenance items.

There are folks in Atlanta that know these cars any may be able to help.

Cheers!

Thanks Glen M for the welocme and the advice. That is helpful and anyone else that has ideas as I try and navigate through the good info here are welcome to steer me somewhere.

Also, Gary Knox was correct. This one sat at the dealer unloved waiting for the GTS to arrive and the original owner said he stole it for what he thinks he remembers being at over 20k off list when he took delivery. He origianlly went in looking at a GTS but couldnt pass up the deal he says. Plus his wife loved the white of cousre to perpetuate some stereotypes.

Good work tracking down the background story, the history gives a different dimension to the car.

Are you planning to do the work yourself?

In addition to fuel lines mentioned above, check the brake lines and also the suspension bits-the rubber is old-even in a climate controlled garage-and becomes less spongy and can crack. Vacuum lines will be next. I suspect this car probably looks clean all around.

Also check the ball joints and get the car aligned-especially after park-by-feel...

How can you tell if you have one of those cars?

Um, no one has mentioned TBF. Get that checked ASAP, also do the TB/WP job. These are deal killers and I mean right now. When I bought my 928 with an unknown TB, I had it towed home.

My recommendation is to start with a bumper-to-bumper over-under inspection. Download the guide in my link. Since you are new to 928s, some of it won't make sense, but use it as a guide to do your rennlist searches so as to start the process of making it make sense. You need to pay immediate and specific attention to the timing belt system and crank end-play (AKA TBF check.)

If you want to accelerate getting your todo list for your new-to-you 928 and/or if you don't have the wherewithal to do it all yourself, contact Georgia-area owner and professional 928-dude blown87 (Greg Nettles) and arrange for him to go through the car. A very thorough inspection can take more than a full day. The most-important checks that require tools you may not already have - belt and crank end-play - require a significant fraction of a day of labor.

Default Here is the final report on this 928

Looks like it was a pretty good deal but I got lucky in that regards not doing a full PPI. Member PJG (Paul) gave exceptionally good insight into the car and his notes were dead accurate.

The gamble was the mechanical issues and how severe.

I took a lot of the advice all you were kind enough to recommend along with endless searching through the treads and post.

You will all cringe on what I did next but I had the car shipped directly to Henssessy Porsche in Atlanta about 10 minutes from my house. My office is 980 Hammond Drive if that address rings a bell for any members. It's Porsche's NA HQ although I do not work for them or affiliated with them they occupy the floor above me and below and my parking garage in our office complex may be the greatest one in the entire world.

I found a guy who really helps the dealers try and keep their staffing well rounded from a talent perspective and he said hand down go see Jack Swift at Hennessy.

I did pay for the inspection up front and here is what was found. Not much that Paul had not already had viewed on his visit while the auction was happening.

Regardless here is what I had completed before ever driving the car:

WP Replacement though Jack said the one on there wasn’t as old as you would have thought.

Brakes are good and I replaced all fan, alt, belts.

A/C blowing now blows very cold after charge and the system had been updated.

Cooling fans are working after cooling fan c

Rear ac flaps partially fixed. Some had come loose and where in the trey after removing the vent housing. I replaced the ones I found but will be on the hunt for one that has all the slats in place.

Wheels have severe curb rash on 2 rears. I’m not sure whether I should repair the wheels or upgrade. I like the thought of keeping it as stock as I can. Any thoughts on this are welcome.

Body good shape, a few dings in front. Mainly on front bumper cover. I will have to see about fixing or replacing but it won’t affect the car much for now.

Driver’s door gasket needed replacement. I’m on the hunt for one.

Passenger side mirror scuffed paint. Wax helped but still there.

Thrust Bearing Failure inspection and flex plate show no signs at 36k miles.

Fuel Lines are good although I running through some old gas right now so the sensors are probably pegged all the way over. If rough starts continue I may have them flushed anyway.

PSD Flush was not needed according to the inspection.
Brake lines are good at 36k.

Suspension bits-the rubber is old-even in a climate controlled garage-and becomes less spongy and can crack. Inspection says they are fine.

Vacuum lines will be next but not until maybe another 5000k.

Check the ball joints and get the car aligned will be done after the tire wheel decision.

Passenger driving light. Needs to be completely replaced. Can’t seem to find any online. Plenty of drivers side ones but few passenger side ones. Only one I found is only $50 less than I can get a new one for from my Porsche friends here in Atlanta.

Radio needs replacing.

Tires are hard from age but not dry rotted. I will get new ones.

Driver door seal needs replacing.

I got lucky but it still cost mucho $ to start to get her right again. It will never be a show car but man did I enjoy finally getting to take her out yesterday.

Jack also said the engine bay was as clean as he had ever seen on an origianl non detailded car. Nor crakling of any paint. He siad there were factory stcikers still in place he had vener seen before like the Shell gas sticker and others.

Does anyone know how many sub 40,000 miles original 928s exist?

I completely understood why all you are hooked. What a unique torquey feel that took me back in time but also gave modern enjoyment. I’m not sure I get the 911 vs. 928 factions battling as they are so different cars to drive but each of them great in their own way.

I’m full in now so I hope it continues to be as much fun as it appears to be but I also know what lies ahead will be constant attention and my project list will never end. I hope the enjoyment stays around as well.

Thanks for all the great advice.
